I changed the tensioner bearing today and what a pain in the ass that lock ring was on top of the bearing! It took me almost 3 hours to get it out, 1 min. for the bearing to come out, 1 min. for new in and 20 min. to get tensioner back on and new belt on. :banghead:. No more sqeeling:D. Next will be rear brakes.

I would have used them but there were no holes in the ring. They were angled bac to the side to make a point. I did try the pliers anyway but no joy. That is why the:banghead:. I had the bearing already when I found the thread about the Avanced part. There are no Advanced auto parts around here any way, I would have much rather bought a new pully and bearing. Oh well, it is finished. Maybe the guy with a thread about his tensioner has read this one.

So, what IS the proper procedure for removing that rretaining ring, as it has no lug holes?

a) Had the O.D. pull a little piece of steel outta my eye last Fall and always wear my safety glasses now ... glad i had them on when he stopped by on Sunday ... his '95 Disco had died ;)

b) Neither of the "snap rings" on my Disco or the 90 had holes in them for snap ring pliers :banghead: Judicious use of the drill press made a nice set of holes in both.

Another one of Rover's 'brilliant' moves. Install a internal snap ring with no holes....

I guess it was their way of making the unit 'non-serviceable' or at least a PITA for the DIYer so you would have to buy the entire new assembly when you screwed it up and beat on it with a hammer in a rage....

The local non-chain hardware store had a complete selection of snap rings, so when I got the old out with a pointy tool, a for-real snap ring went in.

Cheers

Are the bearings in the tensioner the same as those in the idler pulley by any chance? If not does anyone know the part number for the tensioner pulley bearings? If I take it off and apart I'm stuck and unable to get to the store to pick them up. :)

is this the same part number for the dII? I found the bearing but now i would rather just buy the 25$ pully with it already in it. Its pretty embarrassing going throught the drive thru with that damn bearing noise!!!

No the D2 part is a different diameter. There's a part number in another thread. Can you tell me which bearing you got for the tensioner pulley? I've got a spare idler with new bearings fitted, if they're the same I'd rather just swap them over instead of waiting 2 weeks to get a new tensioner pulley.
