Well since tax returns are coming around the corner I am thinking of looking for a 2nd car to add to the rover (so I can just overhaul it). Something for around $2000 or less that gets good gas mileage and isn't ugly on the eyes (honda etc...) I would like to get a volvo or a saab but am open to other suggestions but I do not know where to start. Oh and something easy to work on would be great!

Since you already have a LR, I would stay away from Saab & Volvo unless you really like undependability!
Go with Japanese and just do oil changes...;)

Subaru is good, but I'm not sure about their reliability on the older models. Anything Toyota is going to have excellent reliability. I agree, don't get a Hoda, but ugly cars, especially any model older than the current lineup.

I would go with a Saab 900 or 9000, from my experience they are my more dependable then the newer ones. In case you were wondering my family has owned 4 Saabs annd my sister's 900 had almost 200k miles and only major repair was the water pump.

Well my ugly '98 Honda civic coupe runs like a swiss watch. I picked it up from a honda acura tech so he had kept it up perfectly and STOCK not all jr/blinged up thank God. My wife has taken it over though since she does a lot of home health so I'm stuck with her acura MDX as a daily driver:rolleyes: . One thing that was good about getting that baby was it opened up my rover to more mods. I have owned saab and volvo in the past. We owned a Volvo XC70 for about 6 months. What a freaking lemon! That one got traded for the acura. We had a Saab 900 that had close to 200k when we sold it. It was a nice solid car but the brakes were a pain in the ass, changed often, and the transmission was a little tricky. I'd advise a manual. I have also owned a older Volvo 240 and an old 164E. The 164E was a tank. I wish I could find one with less than a "million" miles on it.

Good Luck,

Mike

ps if you are dead set on Europian look at some older BMWs.

Aaaaakkkk!!!

The "Returns" and the things that you either mail or e-file and the $$ you get back are "Refunds"!

Pfew, I feel better now ...

Easy to work on = rear drive old beater.

Economical to drive = relatively late model teeny car. Our '91 mazda w/ 42k miles is great to drive ... except its front drive and a PITA to work on.

Youngest son's '01 Saturn seems nice, still fwd, still a pita to work on.

Somthing to drive while you overhaul the Disco .... get another Landie! That's why I own three :) Yeah, Mom never said I was the smart one ;)

Saab 9000. You can get a nice one under 2K. Stay away from the autos if possible. See saabnet.com or quasi's site for info.

I will say that my '93 Civic coupe was the best (as far as reliability) car I ever owned. I drove that thing like 160k in 3.5 years and only did the basic oil changes, plugs, etc.. That thing is probably still on the road somewhere.

However, you'll be happier with a cheap RRC or another Disco. Just keep adding to the family. That way, when one is broke, you still have another for the trail.

Something easy to work on? Well, go for a '65-66 Ford Mustang Fastback with 289. Easy to work on AND fun to drive. Parts are pretty cheap too.

My pref for a newer car would depend on what you're looking for.

Mileage? A VW TDI with a good stereo.

Fun to drive? A VW GTI. The new ones with 2.0T are great. I have a 2003 with 1.8T that is fun too.

I would also say go with another Rover, unless of corse reliability is a big issue.
My second choice would be an older Beamer.
In third would be a VW. Im not too big on them, but my friend is an enthusiast, like we are with rovers, and he sais there sweet and stuff.

Hope that helps ^_^

If you trying to stay around 2k, make god gas milage, and want a reliable car, just go Japanese.

Crap that is what I didn't want to hear. :banghead: . Well whatever it is going to be something that gets good mileage because I am basically a runner for my church and even though I get paid mileage I hate putting the miles on the rover.

lol

I just read you said ~$2k.

My vote would be beater VW. But a Toyota or Honda would be good too.

MK3 VW Golf/Jetta's are great second cars. 96 to 98 are the best as they are a little more upmarket. I got a 98 K2 for real cheap and it only had 75k miles on it when I got it a year ago. They are a breeze to work on and really fun to drive, especially if you get one with a 5 speed. The K2/Trek/GLX are more upscale than the regular GL, you can get heated seats, sunroofs, alloys etc... If maintained properly they will go well over 200K miles. The 5 speed will give over 30mpg.
