Best Disco Alternative?

With the rising price of gas and the Middle East about as stable as Paris Hilton after two days in solitary, I decided it was time I had another option besides "the beast." Any sensible person would have probably traded in the Disco for a Toyota Prius, but screw that. After all, if I was a sensible person I wouldn't have bought a Disco to begin with.

After tossing around loads of ideas, I decided on a motorcycle. Now I lack the necessary willpower to ride a "pocket rocket" like a law-abiding citizen and the whole "Harley" thing sounded as exciting as watching paint dry, so, I found myself drawn to the same things in a bike that drew me to the Disco: the ability to go just about anywhere. So, I decided on a dual-sport.

My final decision was an '08 Kawasaki KLR 650 and I have to say it is hands-down the most fun I have had outside of my Disco. This thing is an absolute blast! On the road it rides very comfortably, even at highway speeds. New aerodynamics translate to much more wind protection and improved stability. It has plenty of acceleration to spare (whereas my Disco couldn't get out of its own way) and switchbacks can't help but bring a smile to my face. Off-road it swallows up jeep roads like a demon; the suspension eats rough stuff for breakfast. And, did I mention the gas mileage? I am averaging 50 mpg.

Ok, so it's not a Disco but it's got the same spirit. I can still drive to the playground as well as driving to work. It's better on gas and repairs, which makes me feel a whole lot better about putting a ton of miles on it as opposed to the Disco. It's insanely fun, and it's probably the best alternative I could think of to driving "the beast".

I've read some things about them, lots of aftermarket stuff for off road travel. Good choice, have fun!

The KLR650 is a damn decent bike I hear. I know there are some very good forums devoted to the thing too, but I can't recall what they are called. Big thumper comes to mind but I didn't immediately see something on google.

A Disco and a bike for fun is a very good combination, myself I have a Concours because I like a little more sport with the sport touring. Forget about saving money anywhere though, between insurance mods etc you will be loosing a lot of money if you are just looking at raw gas mileage gains, even when you are getting over 50mpg which I think the KLR can do. Sure does take the guilt out of a nice little trip to Maine just for the heck of it though.

Quick question: When you were researching the dual-sports, what were your options? Does BMW still make their Dakar? I just sold my Ninja, my knees cannot handle the driving position after the surgeries. But I miss having a bike. And a cruiser is not my style. Thanks.

My decision was based primarily around on-road performance and price. Since I needed the bike to cruise comfortably at 70+ mph on the highway for my commute, it took quite a few smaller bikes out of the equation. Many of the sub-650cc bikes are set up more for dirt than street and I knew this stipulation would make it tougher for me on the majority of single-track trails: the added speed of the bigger engine comes with a great deal of added weight.

Price was another concern. Since this was a second vehicle and the riding season out here is a little on the short side, I didn't want to spend a great deal of cash on a bike. BMW makes some downright awesome dual-sport bikes, but $14k was well beyond what I was looking to spend. For me, the new KLR 650 ($5,349) was really hard to beat. The first major changes to the bike in 20 years addressed almost all of the shortcomings of the previous models, but still provided the durability and reliability that made the bike so popular to begin with.

It all really depends on what you are looking to get out of the bike and personal opinion. They estimate the balance on the KLR 650 is 70% street/30% trail, and I would agree with those numbers. If you are looking more street, check out the Suzuki V-Strom. If trails are more your thing, there are plenty of options (including simply throwing a street kit on a dirtbike).

Average American walks/runs approx. 900 miles/year.
Average American drinks +/- 20 gallons of beer/alcohol per year.
Average American gets +/- 45 miles per gallon!

I say Huffy! Get way better gas mileage. (although it makes for a hell of a commute!)

BMW... what a sweet machine for a dual sport! (but yikes for the price!)

R1150GS adventure is the big boy side of the Dakar 650 they had.

I love my KLR 650. I live in Colorado, you need a bike like this. I will admit it is a heavvvvy bike for trails but the trade off is I can load it up and drive it to Moab with joy on the roads. Very versatile.
