Michaels,

I'll PM you about the trip at the end of the month. I would be interested in pretty much any trail ride/camping trip that comes up in the future.

I've ridden in a few places in AL--around Mentone, Bankhead, Talladega, around Coker, Grayrock, down near the beach in the Gulf Shores area, and some ill-advised spots around Huntsville. I haven't found anything around AL that matches the fun but not-too-destructive trails and scenic camping spots in TN, NC, and GA. Would enjoy finding new areas in AL that are good for more than just an afternoon ride.

I have a couple areas I never get tired of visiting. I have done a bunch of camping and light trail riding near Helen, GA and always had a blast. If you get bored the town is fun in a quirky way. Same goes for Asheville, NC. My one trip to Caney Fork was worth the drive but I haven't had a chance to go back. Tellico is another place I wouldn't mind going back to visit. I have jammed in a mix of camping, riding and either trout fishing or kayaking fishing in several areas, but most wouldn't be that much fun without the water-related activities.

Where all do you and the other guys from AL ride/camp?

Mike

Mike,

Do you know of any Mentone trails outside of the National Preserve just north of the falls?

Sam C.,

If I remember correctly, most of the stuff we investigated was off of county road 600, which was a dirt road that we found while checking out some rental cabins. We also found a trail offf of dirt road 948. There wasn't anything too remarkable, although I enjoyed camping after we ran around on the dirt roads in the backcountry area off of highway 35 north of little river canyon. We only did a couple of trips and I didn't make good notes when we went, but hope this helps.

Anything local-ish going on? Always looking for an excuse to wheel over the weekend around here. Did I see one of you guys riding in a green DII with lights, rack, lift and a girl at the Yellowhammer gas station off of 65 last week? I was down there in my red D90 and by the time I got parked they were heading off...

Yeah, my wife and I did Caney Fork by ourselves last winter. It was fun and when we went it wasn't too challenging in the section we drove, just a nice trip. Would enjoy going with a group and trying something more technical. Will try to get free to join.

Sorry I missed out on CF and then got busy and didn't see the post about Amicalola. I have been fiddling with the AC on the 110 for ages and want to do something low stress like Amicalola as soon as I get it back together. I was going to head to the beach for the 14-16th but weather looks iffy. Have any of you guys ever tried camping on the beach at that national park that is near Perdido Key? You drive out and they have open primitive camping. Looks like it would be awesome with a RTT. Anyone? Also, FYI, there are some fun muddy trails up here around Swan Creek WMA after it rains. As long as you don't power surge through every hole they seem cool with wheeling. It is low key but fun.

What is the name of the campsite? I was looking for a campsite down there a while back that allowed primitive camping on the beach.

I haven't camped there but my girlfriend lives on ONO and we drive past it everytime we go to her house and we pass it from the water by boat when we go dive. If you go down the beach front road past the 'bama into florida and you go straight through the curve down there where the road whips back to go over the old river and over to pensacola, right at the last condos. I don't know what the deal is, but you can drive out there and camp on the bay side of the barrier island and its calmer and less crowded, or you can camp on the other side I believe. I think there is a building up there to pay and all that stuff. It looks pretty cool since you can camp right on the beach. We were going to check it out, but its hard when her parents have a house down there...

Yeah, we are down there a bunch because we have friends and family on Ono, Inerarity Point, and over in Fairhope. Back on July 4th we stayed at the state park in Gulf Shores instead of crashing with friends. It was crowded and kind of lame--and not on the bay/beach. When we head out of the Pensacola pass to go fishing, we run by the park I was talking about. I took my kayak over and fished the bay side and started talking to a couple guys who were camping right there on the sand next to the bay and across the road from the beach. I think if you pulled your boat up or had your truck right there it could be very fun, especially with a small group. I didn't get any literature or ask any detailed questions at the check-in area, but it seems pretty laid back and you would probably meet some interesting people. I think we are going to drive down for Labor Day and try camping there on the bay side for a couple nights. I know there is also a park across on the other side of the lagoon that allows camping and has a small boat ramp and docks, but it is more "woodsy" and less "beachy."
