Would the axles require stronger shafts when using portal reduction gears or would stock shafts suffice?

Just a guess but the force would be reduced on the axles but they would still be subject to shock loads just like always. If you had portals you would probably be more inclined to have higher shock loads because you would be wheeling harder stuff.

Why do they use the two little gears (i"m sure there is a technical name for them but I don't know it) on the sides? And why aren't they helical cut?

Two gears are better than one and helical gears require much more expensive machinery to manufacture.

I just wheel on the snow mounds at Wal-mart so shock loads aren't too bad.

I think I'll order some portals.

i could never understand spending that much on a part. For that price I'll just buy a D1 for 2K and get a huge run at the obstacle. If the rig makes it then great. If not, I'll just go buy another one.

If he's getting 1:1 at the hub, that would be sweet. It would be hard to break an axle.

It's still a waste of time and money.

When viewed in terms of $2500/wheel the price is not completely unreasonable. The problem is 4 at $10K.

Ouch!

What a joke. That dude spent $10K on portals and then slaps on some $50 pro comp shocks :smilelol:

Not really sure of the brand, price, or quality of the shocks but being that they are remote reservoirs I doubt they were $50...
