borla vs flowmaster

Thanks Agro for explain the technical terms for the pipe bending.
This thread is going all over the place. I think the whole crocs of this is the Stainless issue, in my experience LR exhaust rot out quicker than most. Use Stainless and you?ve got a laster. However most producers of Stainless for LR?s IE Borla, NRP etc will have that low pitched rumble, like it or not. Unless you get a Falcon system that comes with a rear resonator. Is the issue now Noise or VFM.
And yes I agree Rovers are slow. And 4 branch y pipe and stainless pipes, K&N?s will not give speed advantages. But it will allow the engine to run more efficiently. Like you said this is seen in race/rally car. I don?t think they go to the lengths of fitting all this stiff on racer for a loud noise.

Like I said my system sounds like a Mustang and I?m sick of it now. However it was interesting to see the look on peoples faces in town when I whip it of the lights sharpish. It?s that look of wow that must ?ave been fast, I heard it but I can see it. What was it? Here did it go?

where i'm at right now, duh...
Zepp.... Why do you have a desire to make your rover "loud?" There are many folks out there that drive huge lifted trucks with "loud" exhaust systems. Is that what you want your truck to be like? Do you want to be like those guys? I just don't see why a person who owns a rover would want to put a "loud" obnoxious exhaust on it....? It's your choice as to how you want your truck to sound, I'm just curious as to why.....

I'm planning on purchasing a new exhaust for my truck this summer. I haven't decided system I'm going to get, but I know that it won't be much louder than stock. I don't feel like listening to a "loud" ass exhaust system while I'm up in the hills for 4-5 days on a trip.

And now you say loud is the intended result ? Make up your mind dude. As Eric stated, the choice to go with the Borla system was becasue it's stainless and will outlast the truck. That's a good reason to do it. But to leave the stock system and just swap out mufflers to make a SLOW CAR loud is stupid. Now I'm beginning to think I'm the stupid one for even debating this with such a moron.

Wow...so, could I conclude from Agro's line of thought that it is posing to have a "loud" exhaust on a "bus" like a Rover? Would it be logical than to correlate the idea that it is posing as intellegent through calling every one else stupid; loudly?

muffler

So, are there any suggestions on an exhaust that maintains low dBs and still allows performance?

I have had my Borla for 7 years it looks like it is 2 years old. The sound is great & yes my truck runs more smooth. Torque & Hp you find a 4 wheel Dyno I will take it there!!!!!!!!!!!!!I bought mine as a scratched & dented model from AB 399$. Best money I spent on an exaust EVER!
OH, I am not 17!

Well after resisting for awhile I finally broke down & read this thread. For what it's worth, I have an NRP on my DII and I can tell you it makes a difference. I'm running 33's on stock gears (I know, it's a pig) at 6,000-ish feet & wheelin' at 10,000+ and I was freakin' dragging before I threw that exhaust on. I'm no speedracer now, but it was a noticable improvement.... seat o' the pants,,,, but my experience none-the-less. I didn't want that Harley-sound on the trail & the NRP is not that much different than stock. A bit deeper "V8" sound but nothing too dramatic.

Wow, wouldnt it be GREAT to get rid of all the non-tech posts on this thread and make it useful again!!! :D

Nice post SCSL!!! I like the NRP, but  its REALLY expensive!

Why dont we just chaulk this thread up to PERSONAL OPINION!

Thanks Redneck. It's not too bad for Discos,,,comparable to Borla. I think maybe it's just more for Rangie's w/ that dual exhaust set-up?

Disco Exhaust

I recently broke mine on "The Moose" trails and had it replaced with a RAVIN. A Google search on RAVIN turns up all kinds of Mustang references. To make a long story short - yes, my 95 Disco now sounds like a loud Mustang BUT - at $300.00, CANADIAN NO LESS, there was no question. The eceonomics spoke loud and clear.

Might as well ask

I suppose I might as well ask this: Has anybody ever tried putting a true dual system (homemade or otherwise) on a Discovery, esp a DII? I've been thinking about trying it on my 2000 DII a few years down the road when I have access to a decent shop. What if someone chopped the Y-pipe just downstream of the cats (or upstream, this would only increase flow but might be illegal  ), and instead of a Y, just run two 2.5" (or 3") pipes straight back? Throw some glasspacks in there (or a flowmaster or similer; I'm sure you could fit two flowmasters in that cavern that housed the stock muffler). One might have to be rather creative to fit the additional pipe over the rear axle, but on a disco with a 3" lift, it shouldn't be impossible.

Seems to me this should really open things up flow-wise. And yes, call me a "kid" or whatever you like (I'm only 21!), I come from the Pacific Northwest and I like rigs with off-road balls and sounds to go along with it. Now I now that the little 4.0 liter in the Discovery ain't exactly a bored and stroked small-block chevy, but I doubt anybody here will deny the fact that Rovers are pretty damn incredible off-road...what's wrong with a little bragging in the exhuast-sound department? ;)

umm, my only thought to the true duals.... Wouldnt you kill A LOT of your backpressure? Especially if you start chopping at the Y-Pipe. I would think you would lose a bit of torque from that.

ts. In my opinion it has created a must better torque curve on school bus the as well has increased my mpg, regardless of the increased resonance.
DiscoMastiff said:
If you were looking for the scientific or exact figures on the torque sorry to dissapoint.

No, I was just hoping you'd have something more intelligent to base your "opinions" on rather than the seat of your pants. But you've got some really good tech there, good luck with that...

I don't go to the Pannikin. I don't drink coffee and I don't eat at places that serve organic food and vegitarian bacon...fucking hippies.
Not if I see you first :)

Sam, you can draw whatever conclusion you like. However, there is no correlation between my opinion of putitng a loud exhaust on a Rover and my (alleged) posing as an intelligent indicidual. As I said, that is my "opinion". If I had posted incorrect technical data and called someone stupid, then you might be able to draw such a conclusion. But your postulation is incorrectly suggested and only proves your own stupidity. Nice try though.
