Bottle jack question...

Hey, this could be an easily answered question...
Factory bottle jack is leaking, won't jack. I was going to replace with a Husky 6 ton jack from Home depot.
BUT I like the top of the factory jack that makes contact with the axle tube (the cradle, or "u" shape)

Has anyone switched the top off of their factory jack and put it on a new jack?

Another option I found an adapter on safejacks.com that could work really well, I just didn't want to spend the extra money yet.

The cradle on the factory jack comes off, just tap it with a hammer. You will see how it fits the jack, you will have to modify any new jack so that it fits. I'd say forget about it, just find something else that will do the job.

I've rebuilt a few rover jacks with about 50% success. It's just a bunch of rubber seals. Kind of messy.

Just another option, but toss the stocker and use a 2 ton floor jack. I have it in the back strapped down. It takes up a little more room, but it is worth it IMO. I use it bc two reasons:

1. It works on soft surfaces better

2. My D2 is lifted and I think the floor jack is more stable lifting higher.

Rebuilding them is not hard at all (once you figure out that a strap wrench is what's needed to get the body off the base without destroying it), but I got my ass handed to me trying to get the right rubbber bits--even with a full-service hydraulics shop, it can be a pain finding the right o-rings. I went to a huge hydraulics place in Carlisle PA and spent about 20 min with the desk guy who very kindly invested lots of time in a $3 sale . . . and they just couldn't match all the o-rings. It went back together OK, but was STIFF, so I tossed it.

Anybody have all the proper dimensions, by any chance? Would be a help to N8thgr8 if he does decide to do a rebuild (and to me if I regret tossing mine and get another and rebuild that . . . )

I also tried getting a local welder to weld the little cradle on to a Central Tractor-sourced bottle jack (I like that cradle, too); the guy wanted something outrageous, ($55 IIRC) so I didn't do it. But I still have the cradle--need to price welders here now that we're in VA. Or find a friend with a welder . . .

Na I just had a universal assortment box that did it for me but I had about 4 jacks that stopped working mostly the telescoping was inop. Some orings had the correct thickness but were small so it was a get the next size and stretch it.

When I worked that old salvage yard some days I had ample time to do things that had zero success.
