My 98 Disco's (211k) brakes perform and feel like manual brakes.:banghead:

I took the servo check valve out and it tested fine (air in 1 direction only, towards servo). With the air line disconnected, the brakes were actually worse (even more foot pressure needed to provide even worse/minimal braking). The test in the manual to determine if the servo is working showed it is working. I swapped a servo check valve and air line from a known good braking system, and no change in poor performance.

The anti-lock brake fuse is pulled, but the problem existed before anyway, as well as the random loss of brakes due to sensor misinformation which was cured by the fuse pull.

The trouble shooting guide in the back of the manual gives some choices, such as failure in one of the two hydrolic systems. This would aparently result in brake force being applied to only two wheels (which could account for poor performance). I suppose this could be confirmed by putting her up on 4 jackstands and testing the brakes. No fluid leaks are seen or evidenced. You could not lock these brakes on wet roads.

Have any of you experienced this issue personally? This is not, in my opinion, a brake pad quality or brand issue. On an aside, the pads in the front calipers "click" a lot when no pressure is applied to the brakes. Drives me crazy, but not as critical as having weak brakes. This may be a weak spring issue? It makes me a more defensive driver though becasue you need lots of room to bring her to a halt.

Thanks for your suggestions/tips.
