Hello everyone! So after a cracked block on my last used 4.6, I have had a brand new 4.6 long block built from the deck up and have some questions about the break in procedure...

First: What type of oil should i be using for the initial break in? is base oil okay even though I will be primarily running synthetic after the engine gets some mile on it?

Proper break in procedure for a new Rover v8?

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Forrest

I wanted to put a different CAM in the 4.6 but have heard mixed reviews, but apparently all of the parts are new. I have no idea what my parents ended up paying for the Block alone, but i can imagine a lot. It was built for me by a great shop in TX and I am away in Santa Fe, NM @ college. I know it is a little late to ask this but does anyone have any information about a performance cam for the 4.6? My last engine turned out to have a cracked block and I have another block coming my way for the other D2 that my brother has, thinking of doing the metal headgasket conversion with top out liners as well a "hotter cam".

Thanks, Forrest

If you've installed a new cam, or it has a new cam, runt he engine at 2K RPM for the first 30 minutes. Fire the engine up and get it to 2K right away. Sounds brutal but it's how the cam mfgrs say to do it.

Yep. The idea is you want to make sure that the lifters rotate each time the cam lobe pushes them up. With everything new, they might get kind of lazy at lower RPM, and not rotate. Then the lifters will wear faster.

Does your brother have a rotary telephone as well?

Why on earth would one go back to the metal gaskets? Especially when the heads likely don't have holes for the lower row of bolts that are needed with the metal gaskets.

Call Mark at D&D for cams, but don't tell him I sent you, from the sounds of things, I might not want to be associated with you.

(going back to metal head gaskets-sheesh! kids these days)
