Putting a 4.6 in my 2001 D2... engine ran fine when I pulled it, but was leaking in a few areas so I resealed it... I used my 4.0 heads, which I got pressure tested, and skimmed... I did not get a valve job done, and the machinist tested the valves, said they sealed fine, and the springs seemed good.
Got the engine resealed and put back in the truck, I first fired it up, and it ran like crap, but ran as long as I had my foot on the gas, then when I took the foot off the gas, it died... After that, it would not start anymore, it'd crank, but never catch... I troubleshot over the past couple weeks, had spark, fuel pressure, etc.. finally today I did a compression test on a couple of cylinders, first tried 4 and it didn't budge, sat at 0... tried 6, went up to 170psi, tried 8, didnt budge... decided to pull valve covers... found bent pushrods on that side (on 4), and 8 looked like the valve was stuck open. Pulled the other cover and found the rocker above 7 broken.
I'm trying to figure out what may have caused it.. right now I'm leaning towards timing... With rebuilding the engine, I replaced the timing chain and gears with one that I had off of my old engine, it had only 600 miles on it and ran fine when it last worked... followed the RAVE for setting it (having the marks face each other at 6 & 12), etc.. Next step for me is to pull the timing cover and have a look... Is there anything else I should be checking to see what may have caused the seizing to cause the rocker to break/pushrods to bend? The gas in the truck was fairly old (about 7-8 months), could that have affected it?
