Buying Highish Mileage DII?

So tomorrow I am looking at a 2000 D2 with 140K. I know for the most part what to look out for as outlined in here and/or other forums. However, what I wanted to know was if I would be close to the end of the lifespan of a D2 (engine, transmission, electronics, etc) at some type of high mileage? I currently have a Cherokee and I know that the 4.0 I6 can go at least 300K miles easily.

There is that 2000 with 140K - $3800.

There is a 2001 SD with 163K - $3900

There is also a 1999 with 184K on body but rebuilt engine a transmission (??)

That's what I want to know about the D2, at what mileage do I have to worry AGAIN about simple engine tasks and maybe even large things like head gaskets, etc? Hope I make sense?

At any mileage.

Damn so they catch fire and blow up at any time? Challenge accepted. :p

I guess as long as it feels right unlike the one I drove today (3 Amigos, no power, ticking, etc) then I guess gut feeling will decide.

I just got back from a 6000 mile trip in my 99, went over 160,000 while away. The HG were done last year, and I bought the truck with a new water pump. Last year it went to TX once, TX and AZ another time, then ID this month. The total failures so far were HG, a hub, starter, and y pipe weld separated.

That's pretty good. Just standard stuff then.

standard? I dont consider head gasket replacemet standard for anything but a land rover... Get something with a service history and lots of receipts. Try to find one with no current issues so when things do pop up, and they will, you wont have a back log of shit you have to still do to it. Recent head gasket change with documentation is a huge plus. Check the coolant. Is it still red or orange, or was it mixed with green at some point? Dont buy a truck with brown coolant. Make sure the drive shaft was rebuilt or replaced, again you want to see documentation. Don't be in a rush, these arent rare trucks and you will find a great deal on a clean truck if you just look around.

Now I didn't follow any of my own advice when I got my truck. Got it with 104k needed a new trans, full service/ tune up, drive shaft rebuild, watts linkage and a bunch of other shit. She is bone dry though, no leaks anywhere. I got the truck for 1600 but by the time i was done it was closer to 3k... If you are a glutton for punishment, go ahead and get anything you want haha

Lol I meant standard for a Rover yes. I will definitely check the coolant issue that you mentioned because I know it is recommended to run Peak or something along those lines? No service history is a definite deal breaker? I know the one I am looking at today is a 2 owner and came from CarMax so hopefully there are records..

Bought my 00 D2 with 170k because it had the full Safety Devices rack and had been maintained. Was in good condition overall. I've done mostly typical maintenance and repairs, tires, o2 sensors, serpentine belt, shocks and springs. It now has 193K and going strong. Sure, it's beat up and needs a lot of little things, but it's a Land Rover! What else would you expect?? A great truck actually and I'll never get rid of it!

So these are the codes that the 140K DII had. And the TC, HDC, and ABS lights did't even turn on with the ignition on, so I think I am going to pass.

P1590: ABS rough road signal circuit malfunction
Hardware is OK, but SLABS ECU is sending an error signal

P0440: Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction

P0155: O2 sensor heater circuit malfunction (bank 2, sensor 1)
Front sensor heater RH bank - short/open circuit

P0154: O2 sensor circuit no activity detected (bank 2, sensor 1)
Front sensor RH bank open circuit

P1300: Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected
Catalyst damaging level of misfire on more than one cylinder

P0308: Cylinder 8 misfire detected
Injector 8 excess emissions/catalyst damaging level of misfire

P0302: Cylinder 2 misfire detected
Injector 2 excess emissions/catalyst damaging level of misfire

at 3800 i wouldn't even bother

Don't worry I ran away from it because with those codes and that price, let along the issues, no thanks.

NEXT.

It definately depends on how the truck was maintained, I got a good one. For that asking price these days you shouldn't even have to change the oil when you get one. I paid less for lower miles 3 years ago.

Many codes have come and gone yet both my very high mileage Disco's RUN STRONG!
Every Disco is an individual in its own rights it seems no matter what the lights say .
I only only use the dash lights as a christmas tree and its inherent ability to guage the depth of the water im in at this point. ;)

Ohh okay I looked at one and it had a red ripping oil light. Thank goodness I passed on that one for other reasons too haha.
