I stumbled across this nice little hack and thought I'd drop it in here for posterity:

You mention bypassing the Discovery Alarm Spider, how do I do this?

Between 1994 and 1999 Discoveries where fitted with an Alarm spider, nicknamed as it was a small black box with black wires coming from it. This box was responsible for the immobilisation for certain electrical items and unfortunately is often the cause of ignition misfires etc due to failure.

The alarm spider box can be found behind and slightly lower than the stereo. The easiest way to get to this and to be able to unplug the connector is to remove the stereo and also the centre console surround, allowing you access.

We have placed below a diagram of the 10 pin plug connector plug which needs to be unplugged from the black box and the following connections are to be made to bypass this.

Pin 2 connects to pin 3
Pin 6 connects to pin 10
Pin 8 connects to pin 4

The pic attached is a little blurry.. the order is thus:
2 4 6 8 10
|--------------+
1 3 5 7 9

were these used on NAS Discoverys?

I think I remember one of the breakers/parts guys on here saying they had never seen the spider alarm on NAS D1s.

Great question. I know there is a central alarm unit that *also* controls the damned windows with a draconian fist. Did I make the error of thinking this was the same unit? Can anyone else confirm if the NAS Disco1 has the "spider"?

From my experience, the 94 and 95 Discos have a very primitive system that can be disabled under the passenger footwell with a jumper wire in 2 slots on a junction box. There should be a write-up on here somewhere. I did it to my 95, but I had other issues as well. I think it’s the black and orange lines, and you can either jumper them in the box or scotch lock them as a splice (at your own peril).

The directions posted don’t apply to what I described. The 95 fix is very easy to do.
