I think Thievery Corporation was on the Garden State soundtrack, too..... I'll have to go find it and check (or just google it, lol...)

Enjoy BCMS too. Blue Highway are okay, they play them a lot on the station that I listen to. Actually, Mike, I find several common groups.... I've gotten into the Shins, too, and there's a lot of clawhammer on the radio too. Just to much of Ralph (but, he lives nearby, so, they're not gonna slight him, eh?). I've got Iris DeMent and the Secret Machines loaded together... odd mix, eh?

You might enjoy this radio station: http://www.appalshop.org/wmmt/

Iris Dement, I can't forget that voice...

Ever heard her "Mama's Opry" on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Will the Circle Be Unbroken V?

Yep I know what you mean. I'm in the AF still but own a home just up the mountain from you in Wolf Laurel just over the State line (Sam's Gap) hence the love of clawhammer. It just fits! Check out www.wncw.org

Cheers,

Mike

Argh!

In Whitesburg/Jenkins/Wise/Norton, WMMT is on 88.7. WNCW is on 88.7 in Kingsport. As I come home to Kingsport, WNCW walks in on WMMT, drives me nuts. I do listen to WNCW, but wish I had WMMT w/o having to go to the internet....

WNCW is a college station. Nothing wrong with that, it's a cool one.... WMMT, tho', isn't close to any college, it's a local-community non-NPR public radio station, has it's own homegrown feel... I often have flashbacks to KBHR in Cicely, Alaska..... it's like the real thing, if ya know what I'm sayin'..... (to continue w/ Iris in the topic, too.....)

Some afternoons, the bluegrass gets to be a bit much, or moreso, the gospel. In the mornings and on Fridays, they've usually got a wider variety... might have a Frau Frau followed by Don Williams, then Dread Zeppelin followed by the Carters, Judas Priest then Enya. Volunteer-run, shows come and go... They had a show called Ska Punk and other Junk that I loved and miss. Same with Little Debbies Rockabilly Hoedown (opened every show with SCotS). But, while shows come and go, they are still themselves...

My dad's side mom was born in Bee Log. Higgins, Browns, Edwards, Bradfords, in the area from Burnsville north along the Cane, like Sioux. [ My last ancestor to move to the area (western NC/ Upper East TN / southwestern VA) arrived in 1800.... all the rest of my ancestors were already here.... roots run deep here. ]

Ever get over to Carter's Fold? It's spittin' distance from here, you pass one of my family's old cemeteries to get to it (or rather, you go past the hollow's mouth.... er, sorry, the holler.... ;) )

leslie, carters fold is awesome! last time i went (maybe 3-4 yrs...i dunno?) i got to see johnny and june cash play...of course, it was not an announced gig as usual...which just made it more exciting! took my father-in-law down for his b-day! june was hillarious...she really had a "larger than life" personality! i believe it was right about the time johnnys health started to fade, as he had to be helped by 2 ppl down the back stairs. i would guess, one of his last shows...?

of course, its a good show without the cash's as well....

Leslie,

Yep my family roots are deep in the WNC mountains too. They are all Scots-Irish; Scotland, Ulster Plantation, Charleston up to the mountains. One you might recognize is my great great great grandfather English. If you ever head up Pisgah National Forrest from Brevard like you are heading to Sliding Rock and Looking Glass Falls you pass by a National Monument called the English Chapel. He built the original church there in the mountains. He was a Methodist minister and his brother was a doctor. My grandfather used to tell stories of riding with his great uncle horseback through the mountains to see patients when he was a little boy (turn of the last century). They owned over a thousand acres of what is now part of the Cradle of Forestry. They sold most of the land up by the Davidson to the Vanderbilt's for the heavy sum of 50 cents an acre! Most all my family came the same way to those mountains as did many of the local Scots-Irish.

Cheers,

Mike

Mike, ever hear a band from NC called "Come On Thunderchild"? As far as I know they only did one CD in the late 90's, at least that's all I can find.
Camping music? Humpty Dumpty LSD, Butthole Surfers.

I just got back from an off-road motorcycle camping trip. I brought an MP3 player with mini speakers. The player was loaded with the most eclectic mix imagineable:
from hair metal to reggae to 80's pop to hard industrial to new age to skate punk to disco to celtic folk.
It was a fun listen while roasting kabobs over the fire & smoking Clint Eastwood cigars.
