I have a chirp or sqeak that happens as soon as the truck starts rolling, wether I'm on the gas or off the gas the squeak is there - Now, If I lightly press on the brake the squeak changes, and if I brake fully as if to stop the squeak goes away - I don't have any vibrations.

This started on the 4th of july, on july 2nd and 3rd I went on an overnight camping trip and pushed the truck through tire height bodies of water filled with loose gravel and rocks of all sizes, big and small.

Does this sound like the effin driveshaft? I have time today to lift the truck up on jackstands, what do I look for play in:mad:?

Chirps/squeaks but no vibes in and off the pedal? Wading through tire deep water with rocky bottom?....sounds like loose exhaust somewhere...check the joint where the Y-pipe meets the rest of the exhaust system.

or silt debris etc in the brake area, especially since it goes away with braking. you do need to inspect it and pinpoint it before you head out. if nothing else, hose the hell out of the brake regions and see if it goes away

Exact thing happened to me a few months back and it WAS the front drive shaft. U joint to be exact. Visually inspect it to see if there is 'fresh metal' or anything like that. Depending on the amount of play you can drive it if need be but you do want to get it fixed pronto. Just take it easy, drive slow etc.

I took mine to the dealership who could find nothing wrong...I figured it out myself. Straightforward replacement with a socket set etc. You can get a new one from Atlantic British, used from Great Basin Rovers or let one of the fellas here tell you how to fix it yourself.

- good luck.

Deal of the day is about $50 in parts plus a couple hours with a wrench, giant C clamp and some sockets to press out the joints.

Why is everyone here so scared to replace U joints?

I have a 40-ton press that says I ain't scared to press anything ;-)

Yea, you can do it cheap, but for a lot of people that lack experience installing u-joints its not a bad deal.

I agree. Maybe there could be some of those small rocks stuck in the wheels and when you roll forward they squeek. A friend of mine had to take his wheels off after a river crossing cause he got stuck in gravel and the rocks where wedged in his wheels. Such as a rock stuck between the dust shield and rotor.

Check on the brake thing, but SERIOUSLY, if it is the front driveshaft you do not want to be driving anywhere, or you WILL NOT be driving anywhere, and you will have a great cutaway view of your transmission.

i guess you don't have a cdl, so if it does give out, even without taking out the transmission your still dead in the water.

Mine was doing the sqeeks thing, did not know what it was. Finally it was the driveshaft but its brand new ? The ball kit was leaking grease ? It looks like a rubber is craked around the ball kit ? i ordered another ball kit from napa i know there shit but i cant find precision 617 which is the better part.I finally introduced some grease in the crack
with a needle and it went away. Now i took the driveshaft off and will bring it to the driveshaft shop. The thing that bothers me is that craked rubber. How did it get craked ?And the new ball kit has no rubber on it ? Just a washer with the rotating ball ?

I'm placing my bet on a hub that is going south. I had the exact problem. Soon after the noise only got louder. Rear seal on the front hub... replaced the hub.. all is good.

the shop that rebuilds mine for me throws the rubber boot away as they say they cause more problems than the absence.

Does that rubber boot hold the grease in it ? Or theres no grease in there?
I put grease in there and it went away but was it just the ball kit that was causing the sqeek ? it sure looks like it .Because its brand new like 500 miles. Wondering if it was because of the boot cracking ? Basically no need for that rubber and water getting in there is not a problem PT ? Sorry for all the questions !:)

Grab ahold of the double cardan joint. If there is any movement in the u-joints, DO NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE ANOTHER INCH UNDER POWER.
Why on earth nearly all ex-dealers keep telling me I am getting over-obsessed with the Uj and front driveshaft issue?

I feel vibrations at 42+ mph, but from 70-80 mph go away.
My local workshop (no longer a dealership) is always telling me he did not even see a broken one., that these things are lubricated for life and I should wait till it broke! that Land Rovers fail because we owners are tinkering too much!

Today I nearly had to shout at him. Finally, he'll accept changing parts (supplied by me, THANKS ALL for the precision part #s and the rocakuto web address) but only after balancing the front tires.

I've driven lots of unbalanced tires, mainly in my 88" Land Rover Santana, and even remould ones, and vibes never appeared under 60 mph, always began at 60+ mph.

Finally after a nearly 2-year fight I'll be able to drive relaxed with a newish drive shaft.

What do you think about it?
