Cant Open My Hood

Well the other day I was driving up a very steep road and my rover overheated, I pulled over before the temp gauge got to the red line (actually I pulled over before it got to the white line in front of the red line) Anyways, smoke is pouring out of my hood, and I open my door, kneel down next to the truck (which was necessary to open the hood) and go to pull the hood cable, and half the handle is missing. I can get a pretty good grip still, but it wont release anymore. I'm pretty sure the cables are in tact, but when i pull the handle it wont budge. the hood was hard to get into when the whole handle was there, but it was possible. any ideas how i get under the hood. (I can take pics of the handle if need be)

And on the overheating thing, its never overheated before, I let it sit for 20 minutes, then turned it on, turned around, and drove home. Temp gauge was right around middle the whole time. I cant get under the hood to inspect the engine though (no leak on ground). Drove it today to work and back, no problems, no loss of power, and temp gauge was sitting pretty in the middle. Water pump was replaced like a month ago, so I think its the tstat. what do you think?

Also, when I get the hood open, I think i'll be switching to hood pins. anyone have instructions on how to install, and a good place to buy hood pins.

If it makes any difference, I overheated next to a temple. :D

1996 D1 134,XXX miles and needs an oil, tcase, tranny, and diff fluid change. (and probably brake and power steering too, coolants new though  )

The handle on my DI is half broken as well, I tight a rope to it to work as a handle.
Just grease all the joints and launch for the hood and it should make a difference.

Don't drive around temples--jewish, labour, mormon, krishna or otherwise.
They emit strange radiations that suck up your wallet.

I use to regrease the cable every so often and it made pulling the release much easier. Then I finally snapped the handle a couple of months back. I purchased a new cable and handle pretty cheap and put them in. Now I have no problems with opening the hood using 1 finger.

when I snapped off both wings on my hood release handle the vise grips from the shower knob moved into the disco. roommate was pissed but fuck him.

Overheating up a hill might be your VC going south, but it could be MANY other things as well..

on the d1 you can pop out the drivers headlight and access the cable to pull it, sometimes having someone push down on the hood lightly will allow it to release much easier.

the overheating up a hill thing points to clogged radiators in most cases...with 134K on it thats where I would start.

And that would make sense, but I've driven in the canyons and other various hilly roads and it never overheated. I'll still try to check it out though.

ok, so got the hood open with a pair of pliers, and first thing i noticed was my engine was dirty as shit. But i also noticed that the coolant tank has some "spill trails" on the side, and there was coolant in that large hole in the top. the cap was also a little loose, not severely, but i was able to turn it about another quarter turn before it was snug. I'll take some pics to show you what I mean.
Also, any word, opinions, advice, or suggestions on the hood pin deal?

Personally, I'd prefer not to use hood pins, way to Whiskey Tango for me.

Whoa, did "I" really say that?

Yeah, you just said that.

what would you do as an alternative to hood pins? WD40 the hood cable all over? Replace the hood cable? or something else?
