Closing Rest Stops to save money
states saving money = good
not being able to pee on a roadtrip = bad

How about this:
Louisiana has closed 24 aging rest stops out of 34 since 2000, saving $250,000 a year on each, transportation department spokeswoman Amber Hebert says.
$250K a year per rest stop?
that's a lot of money. Wonder what that's paying for?

If they're going to close the rest stops, they ought not have a problem with people pulling over and peeing on the side of the highway.
Not everyone can put their wiener in a bottle while driving...:ack:

As of today Virginia closed 18 rest stops.

What I can't figure out is where do the truckers go to sleep now? Don't they have to get off the road after so many hours?

Hmm, why in the fuck close them? There arent enough of them anyway. I know when i drive from VA to NYC, the rest stops in MD and NJ have shops in them. Why not do the same exact thing throughout every state. Instead of just having a bathroom/vending machine one. And make merchants who want to sell there pay for the rest stop maintenance. The rest stops up north are always flooded with people. Who wants to turn off expressways and get food and shit when u can just stop by one along the way. I d say thats a win win situation.

The reason that they close them is that they want to hurt the people who pay taxes and support the system, not the bottom feeding crack ho who has 12 babies on the public dole.

Other than saving state-supported money for operations...couldn't this also be seen as a way to drive more business to the convenience stores/gas stations/groceries and Walmarts you often find near highway exits?

I'm not saying that is good or bad (depends on the area) but it would certainly force people to exit where there are established (hopefully open) businesses.

What's a rest stop? I've always been amused when driving in the east....every few miles there has to be a shopping mall in the middle of the highway. As if everyone is going to waste away if you can't get a Big Mac and a large Coke every few miles. Out here in AZ we just pull off the side of the road and pee in the dirt.

Some of them are State "Welcome Centers" also....where you can get free maps and talk to a tourist helper/security person! Others are called a "travel plaza" and include popular chain restaurants. Some of the basic ones (bathrooms and vending only) are very nice and have picnic tables and areas for walking your dog too.

I'd hate to see them all go away, but we probably have more than we need.

They recently reopened Sunset point rest stop at the top of U-haul hill, but others in the middle of nowhere have been closed. With newer trucks and changed driving laws, I guess they figure the truckers can make it to the next truck stop before stopping.

What's so stupid is both Lt. Governors running for office have vowed to re-open the rest areas. So why even close them at all if the new incoming authority is going to re-open them?

In Virginia, at least, the closing is temporary.

i don't care much for them in general. i know how shitty it is to be somewhere with low gas & need one of those suckers.

i think there are way too many tho, that's for sure. i really only like going to burger king wasted at 3am & eating 2 massive breakfasts. that shit is amazing drunk. wouldn't touch it sober.

that's my concern too. truckers can only drive for a certain amount of time then they HAVE to stop and sleep or they are in violation of motor carrier laws and face stiff fines and can lose their CDL. This will just make things more difficult for them. They can't just jump off at any exit and run into McD's to piss or go to a hotel. The interstate off ramps will just become more crowded at night.

I don't think so. I went past the one on 95 just north of Fredericksburg last night and they were putting up the concrete barriers to block it off.

Send all the useless delegates home and close Richmond down. They have achieved bugger all for us in the last few years so we should save millions.
Now everyone will be taking the piss out of Virginia

Maybe they will they leave the rest stop parking lots accessible and just close the buildings?
Oh HELL no.
If they did that, people would stop there, and... rest.
And get out and pee in the grass.
