What does a Throttle potentiometer do exactly?

A week ago the engine stalled while backing out of the driveway. It was took several tries to start it again and it has been fine since. The check engine light came on after it re-started and the code was 17 which leads to the question above.

The TPS is a resistive device supplied with a voltage from the ECM . Movement of the accelerator pedal causes the throttle valve to open, thus rotating the wiper arm within the throttle position sensor which in turn varies the resistance in proportion to the valve position. The ECM lengthens the injector open time when it detects a change in output voltage (rising) from the throttle position sensor.

In addition, the ECM will weaken the mixture when it detects the throttle position sensor output voltage is decreasing under deceleration and will shorten the length of time the injectors are open.

When the throttle is fully open, the ECM will detect the corresponding throttle position sensor voltage and will apply full load enrichment. This is a fixed percentage and is independent of temperature. Full load enrichment is also achieved by adjusting the length of the injector open time.

When the throttle is closed, overrun fuel cut off or idle speed control may be facilitated dependant on other inputs to the ECM.

The throttle position sensor is self adaptive, which means that adjustment is not possible. It also means the throttle position sensor setting is not lost, for example, when throttle stop wear occurs.

Thanks Chris!

Since it is the first time I've had a Code 17 I'll consider it a random "Lucas" problem and let it ride. I reset the check engine light and cleared the code. Time will tell.

Merry Christmas!

Paul is right. Most of the time those TPSs get flat spots or crusty. For the most part, they are just like a Volume knob. Then they get old, you hear crackling when adjusting... Same thing. The poor computer sees that crackling and gets confused.

What a price difference!

A TPS for a 1994 is more than twice the price compared to the 95-99 model years

Autozone $184.00
NAPA $224.
Rovers North $192.00
DAP $165.00
Rover Connection $165.00
Atlantic British $185.00

Has anyone found a cheaper source?

I'm glad I saw this thread. The other day I posted saying I had a code 17 and I thought it was the TPS. I guess I thought "potentiometer" was the british way to say "PS". And now after re-reading this I guess it is. Mine is the square plug type and on AZ website is only $80.
