coolant leak - need additional input

04 D2 with 85,000.

losing coolant, however only after engine is shut off. Cannot trace where or when but I have now started to see a dribble holding on the tranny cooler lines.

No misfires. Hoses are not leaking, just put a new tstat in, clamps are holding fine. Not running hot, normal temps, getting a few degrees warm (206) at idle after warmed up.

Belt was replaced two weeks ago, had a start up squeel on occasion which I thought might be belt, easy swap so I did it. Could the new belt be putting more pressure on the water pump bearing and cause this leak?

I am starting to think this is water pump going bad, but cannot see the weep hole.

From search it sounds like water pump, could be lower intake leaking from rear, or of course heads (which always gets diagnosed around here).

The above does not go along with the rest of the things you suggested (water pump, head gaskets, etc) if I'm understanding what you are talking about here. If you have coolant on the trans cooler lines and you are positive your hoses and connections aren't leaking, I'd be thinking about a radiator leak, possibly in one of the tanks.

Sounds like you need to clean and dry it off real well and do a cooling system pressure test to see where it's coming from.

Gotta get a better look and also take in to consideration the land angle when reviewing. My driveway is a little sloped so the drip could be deceiving in location.

  • Not saying it's your head gasket, but I did drive mine for about 18 months with a leak. Mine was head gasket. Find source of leak, which can be a bitch, and keep an eye on the scan gauge. Drive it man.

Did this issue ever get resolved?

I have the same issue on my D2, but the coolant appears to be coming from one of the bolts on the water pump.

Adriatic, have you had your heads done? I think the PO of mine had them done and maybe someone didnt torque the bolts properly, hence the leak. Not sure.

Its not coming from the weep hole on the water pump.

All the water-pump bolts tight?

Typical dealer tech response. Don't fix it, just smear some pipe dope on it, it'll be fine.

you do know that the bolts go into the water jackets right?
typical know nothing know it all response

This thing is a turd right now. I'm losing coolant after I shut down. Not over pressurizing, no misfires, no overheating. Tried snugging the water pump bolts down, they are tight.

I feel like I can see some water pooling above water pump, almost seems like it is above the heads. Throttle body heater is not showing any signs. This is all on driver side.

Is is possible for the intake gasket to let water out?

What about the the pipe the top radiator connects too, I think that bolts to the intake manifold have you checked that union? Maybe where it bolts to intake?

Yes, I also know that once they start to leak, the only correct resolution is to remove the front cover and replace the gasket as it is not likely leaking around the bolts, but around the interface of the front cover and the block. If it's not, it will be soon.
