Coolant line filling with air

I replaced the thermostat in my 99 Disco II, and after replacing it one of the coolant hoses (coming from the bottom of the block back up to the thermostat) is expanding like a balloon. The longer the engine runs, the bigger it gets. Opening the top vent screw releases the air/gas, but it just gets more in there after I close it up again.

Looking for ideas on what could be the problem. It did not have this issue before I changed the thermostat, but it was overheating with the old thermostat (I changed it to try and fix that issue thinking it was stuck).

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Derek

Are you sure you didn't switch the two big hoses on the top of the stat? I have never seen that happen, but that"s the first thing I would check. If not then take the stat back off and look for any problems in the casting.

Check for exhaust gases in the coolant. If it was overheating before it could be a slipped sleeve. Sorry to assume the worst, but you may want to start there before throwing in a new radiator.

Its not a slipped sleeve that causes the problem your talking about. It's cracks in the block behind the sleeve.

Thermostat fitted wrongly as above, my son did exactly the same thing on his V8.

Peter

I was thinking this may be the case, but thought I had it right. Here is another pic from a different angle, the hose that is inflating is going into the "Y" portion coming out at an angle from the thermostat:

Does that look right?
Thanks for the help/suggestions!

Derek,

Looks correct to me.

Have you had a chance to bleed coolant system yet?

If not air in system or BFS thermostat consider the possibility that your hose is simply failing.

Good luck.

I thought that I had bled it properly when I put the thermostat in, but I am going to try it again. Also going to try a different thermostat.

Thanks!

Peter,

Appears correct routing to me.

Glasses may help when viewing photos you old fart or mine may just be installed wrongly too?

Best regards,
Old Fart Junior

You can tell from that crappy picture that the two large hoses at the top of the stat are in the right positions? I can't tell shit from that pic. If it didn't do that before it's either those switched or the stats not bypassing.

Looks wrong to me, according to the picture from RoverNorth, the ending coming straight up should goes to the water pump and one coming up at an angle goes to the upper hose.

It kind of looks like he's got the t stat twisted to make it meet the wrong hoses. It would be sooo easy to just switch them and see if it stops doing that. Could have switched them about 5 times by now.

Derek,

My '04 is routed exactly as yours is and I have no ballooning hose or overheating issues after doing my recent drain, flush and refill. Unfortunately LR didn't do a very good illustration job when they published the Workshop Manual and Illustrate Parts.

Sort of good news, just found another photo of one installed trying a bing search rather than google.

Land Rover likes cartoon drawings that are like a comic book. Pictures of trash cans to signify that you discard something. A picture of an eye to say inspect. But it's so a guy in Russia looks at the same comic book and they don't have to put out a service procedure in 100 languages. Shitty but that way for a reason.
