Coolant overflowing

Drove about 8 hrs to Wilds and wheeled, no prob.
Drove home. Stopped and picked up pizza 2 miles from house. No problem.
Drove 2 miles home and parked, went into house. Came out a minute later to find coolant overflowing from expansion tank. Turned the key to ACC and temp gauge read normal. Popped the hood, engine did not seem overheated. Sorry, no digital gauge.
Been running fine since.
Thoughts?

History: Did HG, new radiator, water pump, coolant hoses last Oct. Drove 1300 miles to the Rally with no probs. First two days on trails it did the same thing. Both times no evidence of overheating, and both times it finished the trails fine. Drove home no prob and have had no probs since through multiple hwy and off-road trips.

Could it be air in the system from the D1 being a pain in the add to bleed properly? I have no coolant leaks and no "milkshake" in the oil or coolant.

Yes, in my D1 I had a similar problem with overflow, no overheating and proved to be an air bubble. Bled it...... bled it again and the problem finally stopped. It happened after the HG job just like you described and never overheated. IMO with all the cooling system parts you replaced an air bubble is the culprit.

Is there anything that could cause air to get into the cooling system without me opening the system up to work on it? Like a slipped liner perhaps? I have a tick/knock that I suspect is a slipped liner.
Could the system be getting over-pressurized some how?

Yes it could be a slipped liner less common in D1's than D2's but still possible. When you did your HG what did the cylinders look like? Which ones were steam cleaned? If not located near the water jackets good indicator of a slipped liner.

Wish I had paid more attention or at least taken pictures at the time. :banghead:
I have a nice "tick/knock" going too and I've ruled out the lifters. So liner or rod bearings I guess.

It would be my guess that your symptoms are the early stages of short block failure. While liner movement is a possibility, a more likely situation is that you are developing very small stress cracks where the head bolts bottom out in the block. Take a look at the photos on this blog story I wrote last year and you can see what happens. The engine in the story was like yours at first.

So if your block fails do you have any plans for your rig? Maybe a 4.6 swap. I contemplated this as well when I did my HG thinking that when I got done the problem might not be fixed but so far so good for me. We shall see as summer wears on my rovers coolant system. If mine fails I'm doing the engine swap.

Let's think positive, have you replaced your Pressure Cap? Have you tested the cap or the Cooling System? When the engine is running you have fans to keep the temp under control and the pressure down. When you shut the engine off, the fans stop cooling and Heat-soak causes the pressure to go up. Yes, it could be worse, but it's worth checking.

Fan clutch condition?
IDK? What would that be, fan running too much or not enough? If anything it seems like mine runs pretty frequently.

As far as replacement engines. Guess I'll start saving and see how much I have when it decides to take a dump on me.

Does the fan clutch lock up?

Does your coolant reservoir leak or having a whistling noise after you drive it. I had to replace mine, and haven't had any issues since with leaking coolant.

Nope, I've got the white version from Will. Maybe I'll get a new cap for piece of mind.

Nah, i have one of those somewhere. Probably wouldn't know if it worked anyways since the last time it happened was 8 months ago.
