Cooper Discoverer ATP

Hello, I am new to DiscoWeb so I thought I'd start a tire thread.

Has anyone run a set of the Cooper Discoverer ATP's?

Here is my application:
2004 D2
124,000 miles
OME lift with HD springs and the standard nitrocharger shocks, netted just under 3 inches.
Now mainly off-road/camping truck as opposed to daily driver...but I do occasionally drive it on the highway and I drive highway miles on my way to camping. I've only put about 5,000 miles on the truck so far this year.

I've worn out a set of 265/75/16 BFG AT's after nearly 64,000 miles (5th tire rotated in). These are great tires with one Achilles' heel....mud. They are racing slicks in the mud. I don't do much mud driving but when I do, I don't want racing slicks. Most of my stuff is desert gravel and rocks. Need a strong tire for this and the BFG ATs have been great.

I am thinking of going with 285/75/16s. They should fit with the current suspension and I have 1" spring spacers that I can install if needed. May install the spacers anyway just for something to do. Main concern is that the 285 probably won't fit with the stock spare mount - I flipped it upside down to fit the 265s and I'll either modify it or make a new one to fit a 285 on there. I'll figure it out.

I'm looking for a good all around tire but I'm willing to sacrifice some highway comfort for off-road performance now that this is not my daily driver. A guy at the horse ranch has 285/75/16 Cooper Discoverer ATPs that I saw this weekend so I decided to research them. Seem like a good tire with good tread, Load Range E, thick 2-ply sidewall (as thick as BFG AT's 3-ply), and 55K mile warranty.

I was previously thinking of BFG MTs but I really don't need a dedicated MT tire. I've also heard they balance for shit, wear quickly, loud as hell, etc. Then of course others say they are the perfect tire. I see them all the time on Rubicons out here and you can hear them roaring on the highway from a mile away.

Another pro for the Coopers is that they will be about $500 less for a set of 5 compared to the BFG MTs. I'm not too worried about the money but hell...$500 is $500.

So, anyone have these Cooper ATPs?

for what its worth, my MT's wore wonderfully but are at the end of their life cycle due to sidewall dry rot. That being said (up to this point in time), the tread is wearing uneven, and now damn near impossible to keep balanced which results in a horrible highway experience/noise. Mine dont appear to roar like they do on jeeps, I think that noise is enhanced with most of those douchebags enormous fenders which create an echo of sorts, which they like btw.

What about the ST line of tires

I would agree with this. I daily drive mine and run the STT. A mud terrain with sipping, and I would describe exactly how you did above, "I'm looking for a good all around tire but I'm willing to sacrifice some highway comfort for off-road performance"...I have 33"s and they don't budge until 16 lbs or less. I have had them for 4 years at least and I'm still all warm and fuzzy about them.

Edit: I have the Columbia Overland spare tire thingy....to fit the 33"

Oh yea, welcome to Dweb.

I love the stt. And my mom runs the older atr. Edit she has 777 fronts and 781 rears and 275/65/18 so a tall 32" tire and no rubbing.

Pep boys buy three get one free for the win. I would run those if I needed a street terrain.

your link doesn't work. aren't the ATPs more street than off road? I'm running cooper AT3s and love them. lots of friends also running them with the same feelings towards them... great tires on road and off.

I will check out the STT as well. Thanks for the feedback.

Anyone know of any other options for rear door spare brackets that will fit a 33"? I tried to buy from Columbia Overland but no response.

I'll get a link to an ATP image up when I'm at a computer and not on this phone. The ATP is more aggressive than the BFG AT but not quite as luggy as an MT. It reminds me of the old Big O Bigfoot XTs (which I used to run on my old D1). I'm not impressed by the new Big O stuff.

my copper ST-C s are dry rotting on the sidewall. They probably have 40k +. I can't recall how old they are though. 5 or 6 years maybe.......... Other than the dry rot, I liked the tire. Maybe that is just what happens, I'm no tire guy.

I had a 285 spare on my last d2. Flipped the carrier and then used some large washers as a spacer under the wheel - still had plenty of threads to hold it on.

For a nice smooth running MT I really like my Maxxis Bighorns.

But there are a lot of options in a AT.... General AT2's are good, hankook Dynapro ATM are smooth and nice and awesome in snow, Goodyear silent armor are nice and Goodyear Duratrac are awesome all around but have a sloppy feel/soft sidewalls on road.

Mr. Blue,

Don't be such a lame ass - air the fuck down in mud you dipshit.

You're welcome.

PS: You have fat calves.

Mr. Porterfiles,

I'm always aired down, even at the mall. Go back to your rental car agency day job.

PS: I'm big boned.

Yes, that is the Cooper Discoverer ATP. Thanks

I'm kind of digging the STT too. Maybe I'll try those. I currently have my stock tire carrier flipped with 3 big fat washers on each wheel stud. My stock bumper is also bent up an inch or two from banging it on various things over the years...might have to force it back down.

So far so good with the set of SSt we are running. Very nice on the road and doing way better on the trail then I was expecting.

Spare won't fit on the door? Put it on the roof. In fact, put two spares on the roof. I hear keeping the weight up high helps with stability. And you'll look cooler too.

I bought mine from Discount tire, and I like them. I can't remember the size, but about an inch and a half taller than the original spec size tire for my P38 (I think it was a 65 series instead of a 55 series and a little wider as well).

Basically a lot quieter than BFG AT's that I had on my Freelander (which actually performed well enough that I could keep up with full sized LRs back when I had them about 95% of the time).

I've only had them out on trail once, in a mostly sandy area of central MI. Out climbed a Rubicon with MTs on a pretty large sandy hill. My traction control hardly came on, he almost dug himself down to the frame rails on his. And I did not air down on that trip. There wasn't too much greasy mud that we can find in MI, but on loose sand and silt they did good (which I suspect is mostly in AZ).

Looking forward to winter this year (last year I drove a civic as my daily driver and the snow banks were higher than the civic).
