Costco Fuel

I was just down at the dealer. The other week I had the Fuel Tank replaced as part of the recall on my '95 Disco. I asked them if it was a smaller tank as I seemed to be getting less mileage per tank. However the tank is the same size. Then she asked my if I fill up at Cosco? I thought that this was strange but I do indeed fill up there. She advised me not to use Costco gasoline as it is 'dated fuel' (or something like that) and it can have a tendancy to knacker your fuel injectors. Also they said that it burns 'quicker' than say BP gas so essentially you pay more in the long run. It might be cheaper but it burns faster than other quality brands.
I calculated the other day that I am currently getting about 12.8MPG where I used to get 16-17 MPG. Where I once got about 300Miles out of a tank full I now seem to be getting closer to 200Miles. (I usually fill up when the needle is on 1/4 tank).

Any thoughts out there on quality of gas? I know different brands have different additives like detergents but surely gas is gas?

PS My '95 Disco has 151,000 on the clock and still going albeit with a thirst!

I found no difference in gas mileage at all, regardless of where I fuel up - at Costco, Arco, or Mobil/Chevron/Exxon/Shell/whatever. If your gas mileage went down by this much after changing the fuel tank, I would definitely suspect the dealer's screw-up rather than effects of something that you did before and after this recall work.

I've never seen 16-17 mpg from my 95 D1. It was always 15 mpg city and hwy, usually Shell or BP. Lately it's been about 11 MPG. I think it has something to do with big heavy tires, ARB bumper, winch, SD roof rack, etc. BTW, mine has 183K

I don't buy Costco gas but I have a few Costco connections so I think I'll see what they respond with.

The last tank of gas in my Prius was BP and I got about 54.5 mpg where Shell has been getting me about 48-49 mpg. In that car, a lot of that has to do with how heavy on the pedal you are though.

I'm with you. Gas is gas. Costco sells a million gallons per store per year, or some amazing number like that. I don't even know what the hell "dated fuel" is! Did you know that they are the largest wine retailer in the US as well?

Costco / Cosco

COSTCO = CHINESE OVERSEAS SHIPPING AND TRANSPORT COMPANY.
wether its tires , food , or gas or clothing.
the gas and oil comes from the cheapest seller via the chinese shipping company.
so the gas may have been in a container ship for a while.

im not knocking it as everything i wear or use is made in china or shipped here by them.

cant live without it.

I heard they put dead baby seals in it to bulk it up. You can do that in China because they don't care.

Costco does not own their own refineries. They sell the same gas you buy at any other gas station in your neighborhood. Try filling up for a few tanks at a name brand place. My guess is that you will not see any difference other than a thinner wallet. :D

TV program on History Channel said that their is only 1 company that produces, mixes and ships their gas to each station, that is Chevron. Everybody else comes into a port dumps the load into reservoir tanks and is credited based on the gallons dropped. At any time a station can order some gas and have it pump to the local station via underground pipelines and delivered via truck right away. This means that if an Exxon station orders some gas it may get another companies gas, like Conoco gas.

Not sure if that is really the case or not, but if it is then the Cosco gas is the same then Exxon down the street.

money talks and B.S. walks in order for who ever they are to sell it cheap they gotta get it cheaper.
chinese O.S.T.CO. owns ships ,tankers, freight you name it.
if they fill up with oil or gas somewhere in the world where its cheap they bring it to you and you/we buy it.
Its a shipping and transport company that has capitalized by selling the stuff they ship in containers at wholesale wearhouses.they eliminated the middle man.
we get it cheaper.

I used Costco gas (and Conoco and others) for over 2 years on my Disco (206k miles last week) and never noticed any difference. I typically would get between 14 and 16 miles/gallon. Truck is a manual with bigger tires. Costco gas is the same as everybody else's.

(Hey maybe the baby seals will stop the bloody thing from leaking so much oil) :p

Are you sure you're not getting COSTCO and COSCO mixed up? I am in the import business and have used "COSCO" several times.

COSCO= Chinese Ocean Shipping Company

They are two completely different companies with no relation. Although you're right...we do get MOST everything now from China.

I call BS on the poorer gas mileage. Rather, I would say the dealer fucked up your fuel level sensor. I bet if you did the math, you are getting the same gas mileage, per gallon of gas. But, since the dealer fucked up your sensor, your seeing less per tank.....In reality, you still have 5 gallons+- left in the tank.....

Dan, I did the maths and I am only getting 12.8MPG. I used to get 15 + at least. I don't think it is anything the dealer did it is just that I am paying closer attention since the tank was replaced.

PS I didn't mean for this thread to turn into a lecture on Costco Geez!
