disco II 95K started fine yesterday. doctor visit and trip home no problem. by then its about 90 degrees outside. Truck wouldn't start. all lights come on cranks but nothing. Wife calls me at work bitching me out with a sreaming baby and big dog in the car.

Reading the other posts leads me to think crank sensor. Where can i get one? and how to replace?

thanks. yet something else with this truck. gotta love em.

Crankshaft sensor is located on the driver's side of the flywheel, right about the 2 or 3 o'clock position. It's held on by two bolts and is pretty easy to remove. You need to do most of it by feel because of where the bolts are located.

But are you sure it's the sensor and not something simple like the battery being low?

I have a DI and bought mine from the Dealer for $57.00. Do you have an OBDII reader to see any codes? When mine failed it didn't set the MIL. I would check all your fuses first, also see if you have a spark. If you do, it's not likely that it's the crank sensor. At least they are cheap enough that if that doesn't fix it you can just keep it for when you need it. On a 96 Disco it's located on the drivers side of the engine in the bottom rear of the block. Behind a cover with two small bolts. It was easier than it looked. Good luck.

no codes thrown.

It started fine this morning. I drove about 45 minutes to work. After i got to work i started and stopped it three times with no problems.

I guess it could be a low battery. Its been a few years since i replaced it.

Of course my wife had difficulty describing the sound but it really didn't sound like a battery.

Now I am paranoid to drive anywhere I am not prepared to sit for a few hours.

the ride home was a real joy today. Truck started up first thing this morning no problem 20 mile drive. STarted at lunch. 3 hrs later no start. Pumped the gas a little finally started after 15 min.

Driving down the road a mile later and it dies. Sat for about 15 turned to position 2 and put in gear and it started.

Didn't die again - 30 minute drive.

Spider Unit or crank position sensor?

part numbers?

Maybe some one else knows for sure but I thought a DII doesn't have a spider unit. Anything can happen when components malfuncition, but the security lamp in your instrument cluster is supposed to be lit if the alarm is activating while cranking. Crank sensors can fail intermittently ( just so you can't follow your schedule too closely ), it is usually heat related. It will become more frequent if that is what your problem is.

if it is an alarm issue then why would it allow you to start it period?

I could understand it if it wouldn't let me start at all but to drive a while and then die?

Also what does the SES light in the 2nd position have to do with it?

Yeah, I would change the crank sensor out and see if that solves it. It's not too hard to do, and not too expensive. I usually don't like throwing parts at a truck, but this sounds like a crank sensor to me.

to reiterate a previous post on this thread...

do DIIs have spider units. Everything i find in a search indicates this is a DI feature only?

ordered a crank position sensor this morning from rover connection. By far the cheapest. Dealer wanted 108.00

rover connection 57.00 (or something close to that)

I understand there is a new retrofit for the crank sensor. I have cracked and corroded wires. I called the dealership but they had no idea what I was talking about. I also asked for a wire harness repair kit. Have you guys heard of such?
