So my 04 D2 is just shy of 140k miles. I got the cam out last night and it looks like I'll be changing it and therefore might as well upgrade. I don't really care about noise and a smooth idle, reliability and a little more power are what I'm looking for.

1) I've seen a lot of posts saying the Crower 229 and 230 are pretty good, but I haven't seen anything specific to the Bosch EFI system. I live in a smog county, so if there's any chance of throwing codes I'd have to scrap the idea.

2) If that's fine, it looks like the "buick" cams are about 2/3 the price:

$198 - https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cro-50230
$321 - https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cro-53230

I'm guessing that's for the distributor, just looking for a little clarification.

3) Any recommendations on lifters?

4) The main reason I took it apart was because of a bad tick after warming up. While I have the pan off, is there anything on the bottom end I should look at?

5) While I have most of engine taken apart, Is there anything I should look at? I already have head gasket and timing chain kits on their way. How do these oil pumps hold up?

FWIW, I've had it for ~3 years and it's mostly been sitting. I've probably put about 3k on it.

Also, I need to change the cam bearings. Is there anything specific I need to look for regarding the rover v8? Should any universal kit do?

Might as well go deep and get the flanged liners in the block - assuming your block is good - and rebuild the whole thing if your going to take it apart that much. I have performance cams in both my Rovers, a 3.9 and a 4.6. Both passed smog esp. the 3.9. Clean as a new Honda.
Are you in SoCal?

I'm running a Crower cam in my 2004. You'll be fine.
Call Mark at D&D, he can sell you a cam/lifter set that will include a bottle of break in fluid to put in your oil.
He can also answer any questions you have about your engine.
