Has anyone tried their hand at making a custom awning for camping trips, tail-gating, etc?

Seems like it wouldn't be too hard or expensive to do. Or course, I haven't priced one either.

Anyone have some pictures of what there using? Who make them?

I'm in the same boat as you - I've thought about it but haven't acted.

For now, I just use a tarp, a bunch of bungie cords, and two of those cheap aluminum extension poles you get at Wal-Mart.

I do the same as pugsly. However, I really would like the Hannibal setup. The best (IMHO).

I have one of the Hannibal awnings and it's first rate. I opted to buy it after I purchased a Hannibal tent and was pleased with the design and quality. Of course the price reflects the quality, but I can easily set the awning up and break it down by myself within a couple of minutes. I've used it in windy and rainy conditions (although I think it's primarily designed as a sun shade) and it's held up well. I also like that there are no forward supports that go to the ground, so you're not running into them.

The design is not that complicated, so I imagine a person with some fabrication skill could make something similar. Unfortunately, I'm not that person nor do I have those tools...

Devin,

Post up some pictures and I'll see what I can do.

I bought a guide tarp from MEC. 4 small ties fitted to the Safari rack with one extra one on the back of my Hannibal tent. I use biners to attach to the ties on one end of the tarp and extension poles on the other. 9' x 12' tarp. Provides good shelter from rain and sun. Also allows for shelter behind the truck as it extends to the back of the tent when open.

I always wanted one of those. It would be so great for events. I tried to make one for Lucas, with no luck. Of course, I didn't try all that hard. I think the hannibal one is great. Now it doesn't make much sense for me any more-- I actually have no roof racks at all now! How sad is that??

Just wondering, anyone thought of just using an Ez-up? They setup in about 1 minute with 2 people or about 2-3 minutes single. And you can have it on either side of the vehicle or front/rear. I've used mine to keep rain off me while working on the engine (damn Lucas Electrical system), and used it as a "tailgate" sunshade.

Don't get me wrong, the Awnings have their appeal, but for about $100, a 12'x12' ez-up gives ya more coverage for less $$$.

IMO a rack mounted awning to be great for remote camping and tail gating... for me cargo space is at a premium not much room in my D90 even with the roof rack to carry the EZ i have left over from my RV Days? 300$ is a streach I'm trying to find a like new one off a VW Camper, Hopefully with out the rainbows or peace signs... eBay here I come... :D

where i'm at right now, duh...
Ok, bringing back this old thread from days ago. I'm tired of doing stuff like this (see pic) in the 100+ degree heat. Has anyone developed a SIMPLE and light weight awning for an SD rack? Most of my time is out in open desert with no trees for shelter or shade.
