D1 4.0 into D2

So the engine in my D2 decided to start knocking pretty badly yesterday. I had it towed back home and will eventually tear into it. Its always had a slight knock but nothing remotely like what's happening now. The truck always ran great, smooth idle. No coolant usage.
So I've been looking around at just buyinga a used 4.0 engine and doing a rebuild on it, Then go back and see if this engine is even worth saving.
I've seen a couple D2 4.0s for sale, but a lot more D1 4.0s with lower mileage. And cheaper. My question is, can I swap in a D1 4.0 into my D2? I know the front cover is different along with the intake. Anything else that would keep me from bolting it up?

crank sensor bracket is different. youll have to cut off the old one and weld it to the new engine block

Just a wild guess....but is it possible that the knock is a water pump gone bad? Mine certainly sounded that way.

anythings possible. I think the easiest path would be install the correct part

I'm all for that, but it's crazy how many low ish mile 4.0 D1s are out there and for less than a higher mile D2 4.0. I was hoping that it was just the front cover and intake that was different. Cutting and welding on to the block is not my ideal solution. That's why I came to ask you guys

I didn't know there was a diff between GEMs and Bosch engine parts 'below the belt' (non-intake/fuel/spark). It appears there are several!

Given there were no 4.0 14CUX motors, at least that narrows it to D1-GEMS vs. D2 GEMS The legacy parts catalog does indicate different part numbers for the D1 NAS timing cover but the cover itself doesn't "look" different. Certainly the GEMS<-->Bosch bits are different.

This is a great (albeit PAINFULLY SLOW) resource to obtain part numbers and variations between VINs: https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/classic-land-rover-parts/

The timeline regarding the engine management systems for the Land Rover NAS Discovery 2 with the 4.0L Rover V8:
  • 1999-2001: These years would almost certainly have the GEMS system in the Discovery 2 models with the 4.0L V8 engine.
  • 2002: This year was a transition period. Early 2002 models would likely still have the GEMS, but later production models would be equipped with the Bosch Motronic system. The development of the upgrade program for the Rover V8 (along with it's Bosch system) used the code-name Thor, for this final iteration of the Rover V8.
  • 2003-2004: By this time, the Bosch Motronic system was standard for the Discovery 2's V8 engines.
  • Introduction of the 4.6L V8:
    • The 4.6L V8 was introduced in the Discovery 2 during the 2003 model year. However, it's possible that some late 2002 models might have been equipped with this engine.
    • Engine Management Systems for the 4.6L:
      • Bosch Motronic: The 4.6L V8 in the Discovery 2 used the Bosch Motronic engine management system.

i thought all NAS D2s had the Bosch system.

my understanding was that GEMS ended with the 1999 D1 and Bosch was standard on all 1999 D2s.

the above is wrong

all D2 uses bosch, all 4.0 D1 uses GEMS
All 4.0 defenders are GEMS
P38 is split in 99.

Easiest way to tell is look at the intake, but if thats not enough for you look at the sticker on the ECU. Does it say GEMS or Bosch?

I'll update my post to align with this, are you sure?
*the intake is the obvious tell without digging out the ECU :-D
