1995 Discovery with a broken key lock. The key freely turns left and right without actually unlocking the doors. Can the passenger side assembly be used on the driver side? It is getting quite frustrating because I can't use my car! The alarm will turn on and I didnt have a key fob. Now that I do, I can't program it because the alarm will not disengage. Nothing has stopped this car so far, and now something this small is stopping it. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!:(

IIRC, on a D1, the alarm is only activated/deactivated on the driver's door.

So... grab a 13mm wrench, and a pair of ear plugs.
Open the passenger door, reach over to the hood release handle, pop the hood, and disconnect the battery.
Then you can disassemble the driver's side door and fix the lock.

Nice... any tips on fixing the lock? I don't see anything actually broken but like I said the lock doesn't engage. I'm gonna go try and see what I do right now.

That's another plan, too. Meanwhile, these are my findings... pretty much a piece has broken off that links the back part and the front part of this thing. The front parts rotates freely while the back part does not, and that is what moves the lock up and down. Anyone have ay ideas on how to fix? Cheap fixes preferably. Thanks again discoweb!

It's very hard to tell from your pictures exactly what part is broken off... Also, it looks as though some of the pics are rotated 90 deg so it's more difficult to get an idea of the damaged part. If you could disassemble the broken part and then get a good pic of what piece is busted it would be easier to give suggestions. Meanwhile, if you get the fob working you will at least be able to avoid using the key. I recently repaired the power door lock actuator in my '96 by replacing the motor in the sealed unit, so I recognized the actuator assembly in one of your pics, but I didn't spend much time looking at the lock on the door handle which is where your damage appears to be.
There are very few things that can't be repaired with a little ingenuity and some basic tools once you know what the intact part should look like.

Ok, I have the replacement part. Now I just need to figure out how to fix this thing. Do I change the whole door handle assembly and swap key cylinders or do I just swap the plastic parts like Finn suggests? Thanks!

Were did you get the replacement part? We have the same problem, key just turn left and right and when I remove the trim panel the plastic was broken. I have a working key fob and change the battery then one day the fob was battery was disconnected from the unit, soldered it and the fob was not working at all. No light. The problem I have the fob lock the car and activated the alarm. I was able to open the passenger side but alarm went off. Please PM the where I can get the replacement part. Thanks.
