D1 Driveshaft or transmission noise?

Hey Ive got a 96 Disco, drivetrain is stock 130,000 miles. When I shift from Drive to Reverse, Park to Drive, Reverse to Park, etc.... it makes a loud noise, like parts slamming together. I feel like its the driveshaft u-joints wearing out. My Rotoflex has some small cracks in it, would it be making noise? Or could it be my transmission? The transmission shifts smooth while driving, and I feel like the slamming wouldn't be soo loud if it was in the transmission. Any experience with driveshafts or transmissions, my 1st rover so Ive got none. Thanks!

Start with the driveshafts - on a Disco of that vintage and set up like yours it is very likely the POs never cared to check/replace the U-joints (there are two in the front driveshaft, one - in the rear, and the rubber donut).
The rotoflex by itself doesn't make any sounds - until it is shredded to pieces and the three-fingered yokes slam together when you load up the driveline.

The U-joints are about $15 apiece, and you can do it with a pair of 9/16" or 14mm wrenches, a couple of sockets, a hammer or a C-clamp.
I need to emphasize it - it is impossible to say the driveshaft is okay for sure without taking it completely out.

yes it is - but I had a front end driveline vibration in a Classic that I was battling for ages, until I pulled off the driveshaft and cycled it through the entire range of motion of both joints - and found a spot where it would bind.

Hence the phrasing of the post :)

It's like a logic puzzle, think of it as a Venn diagram :D

Venn Diesel? He was awesome in XXX... Ice Cube, not so much.

Quick question on this topic. What is the maximum rotational allowance of the 3rd members when the truck is stationary and in park? Should it be able to rotate 5*...10* ? Same front to rear?

Basically looking for consensus on max. allowable driveline slop at the drive shafts. BTW, not a true hijack as this is sort of related.

I don't think I've ever seen less than 20 degrees. It's not just ring and pinion, it's also spline joint.

I think all D1 make this noise or have the drivetrain slack, when shifting from park to drive or park to reverse. But if your joints have not been replaced in the last 30K miles, I would replace. Parts are cheap and takes very little time or effort to do it.

Does anyone know of a guide to replacing the u-joints or rotoflex? or a thread with photos.... I have to do it myself since im a broke college student, but im a self-taught newbie still. I guess a workshop manual would be of help right

Go rent the U Joint presser tool from local auto parts store it will save you a lot of time and effort. Press out the old UJ's press in the new ones. Trying to remove UJ's with a hammer and socket isnt fun if they are old and you dont have a vice in your dorm room ;) But make sure you put the shaft back together the way you took it apart yokes and what not. Mark it with some paint or a punch. It's pretty easy and straight forward quite a few links online.
