D1 HVAC problems

The passenger side hot/cold control is not working in my '96 D1. When you turn the knob, nothing happens. If I drop the glovebox I can manually adjust the hot/cold blend door. This isnt so hard, but makes maintaining a comfortable temp in the truck a real pain in the ass.

Is there a known problem with the HVAC control unit where it breaks, or any known problem related to my symptoms? I would like to know what I have to do to fix it.

There is no servo on this thing, That I can tell at least... looks like cable/linkage. See when I turn the hot cold on the LH there is a little resistance to it and it works properly. On the RH knob no resistance and the door does not operate.

The cables break all the time. Check out the linkage on the cable from the under side of the dash on the glove box. You can see where it runs back. Turn the know and see if the linkage works..if not..replace the head unit.

OK now more problems...

The illumination (all of it) has gone out. It did this once before, after I did a little wiring near the fusebox, so I dropped the access panel under the column and looked around, closed it, and it started working again. Now I did some wiring around the area (both the fusebox and the cruise switch area) and the damn lights are out again? Is there a fuse for the HVAC lighting (doubtful) or a connection somewhere that is known to give trouble? This is pissing me off, and I really dont want to go through the trouble of pulling the HVAC control for no reason.

ALSO, I remember occasionally during the summary with the AC on and blower on high that it will occasionally die (the blower motor I mean) and then cut back on a short while later. I have seen this happen on a couple RRCs too but I cant remember the fix. Jog my memory please.

THANKS

I've got the same problems as your lights and fan cutting off. My fan sometimes cuts off when I have it on the highest setting. Probably some dirt in there, but not a big enough problem to justify tearing the thing apart to clean it. Usually a good smack to the HVAC controls gets everything working again. Thanks Lucas.
