Have searched on this and come up empty; my apologies if it's already out there in the aether and I missed it.

In the process of trying to figure out a sedimentation/filtration solution for a recent 300TDi conversion, I traced my lines back from my lift pump, expecting the line leading to the lift pump to come from the stock (V8) fuel filter . . . it doesn't. The other one (return line) leads to the lift pump. [no, I'm not planning on running the truck any more in this configuration--I won't start it again until the sedimenter and 2 micron filter on the way are installed]

But how far down in the tank does the return line go? Would I have been able to drive until well below the 1/4 tank mark (which I did) on the fuel gauge if my return line is functioning as the pickup?

Get rid of the stock filter, replace with rubber line. Get a sedimentor and diesel fuel filter for the 200/300 setup. Run a straight pipe from the feed on the tank sending unit. Get rid of the fuel pump in the sender. Don't use any of that flexible line that is found in the stock sending unit.

Thanks, that's roughly what I'm planning on doing, but hadn't thought of getting rid of the fuel pump in the sender--why does that need to go?

What flexible line in the stock sending unit?

When you pull the sender out you'll see the flexible line, it's sort of a yellowish colored hose. The pump isn't used on a tdi setup, you just use the mechanical lift pump and if you'd like, a small, low volume pump somewhere along the chassis but that is not required. The V8 pump would be overkill and would just be another potential failure point.
