So I just put a 4.6 in my 2001 D2... 03/04 D2 4.6 didn't come with oil cooler lines, and it seems like the holes in the 4.6 that were plugged are not tapped right for the existing oil cooler lines... I read a couple of posts on here, some people retapped them, others just plugged them and didn't worry about them. What's the general consensus? Are they not needed? Can I plug them for the time being and fix them properly in the future? I was thinking about re-doing the oil cooler lines in the future using softer lines for more flexibility, also something more stout... and for those who have just plugged, what did you do with the existing hard lines? Tied them up somewhere?

Thanks

if you don't hook the cooler back up you could just flush the cooler out and take the hoses off of it and leave it in place. (or take it out completely)

Does anyone know the NPT or AN fitting sizes for the lines that go into the oil cooler and the ones that go to the engine?

I have a couple of new blanking plugs that we bought for ours when we ditched the oil cooler, but we had the wrong front cover on the engine so they wouldn't fit. The slightly earlier engines had a parallel thread fitting by memory, particularly the 4.6 engines. The earlier timing cover has an oil switch with a 1/4" tag connection, the later cover has a special oil switch with a different connector, there is an adaptor cable/part to convert early to late in the parts catalogue.

The correct 4.0 V8 blanking plug is LGY100080 plus seal MDY100080L. Adaptor cable STC4603

The oil cooler pipe is pre-formed at the end and carries an o-ring seal.

Unless you are in a hot zone, leaving the cooler off gets more air to the water radiator and isn't a bad thing, we ditched ours as it never gets that hot in the UK.

Kept the manual gearbox cooler though, as we do a lot of towing.

I have two new front covers/oil pumps at the factory, I'll see what I can find out from those.

Update:

The blanking plugs are for other ports, so ignore those.

The oil cooler pipe holes are tapped M20 X 1.5, the blanking plug is shaped to carry the sealing o-ring at the end. If you want dimensions, let me know. M20 X 1.5 is a standard conduit thread over in Europe.

The oil cooler port plugs are not listed as a part, they come as part of the timing cover which is a main part and not broken down into smaller parts apart from the seals and the oil light switch.
