I'd say our friend is asking why drop 2200 on a replacement for a D2 when you can get a complete truck for 3 to 4K...

Just saying

How much money do you have to put into that 3k disco to get it caught up on all preventative maintenance? What about all the unknowns when buying a "new" disco? Replacement frames make sense in some situations. I personally don't have the stomach for a job that big anymore tho... but I would love a D2 with galvy frame. I HATE rust.

Frank, you're right about the abundance of cheap (but likely problematic) D2s...except in AZ. But if you want to keep your D2 on the road for the next 20 years and it's worth it to you to buy a frame and do a complete swap, then this is a useful option. People do this with Series trucks all the time. Why not a D2 if you want to keep it? To your point you could buy a complete parts truck, cannibalize it over time as needed, and you'd still have a spare frame to swap in should that become necessary.

If Will could put together a restored D2 with a galvanized frame, tophatted engine, and some other extras there is probably a buyer out there who would pay good money for such a truck. Someone with more time than money.

There is a huge market right now for frames up North especially. We have one being done currently at Sarek in Richmond Va.

RoversNorth is currently sold out. The market is there. Unfortunately the East Coast truck frames have taken a beating....and the days of having an off road toy that you can work on with a simple OBD scanner are gone... The D2 is it and whether or not you think its worth it there are plenty selling for good money still.

Remember I'm from the rust belt of upstate ny…so I know what rust is and my D2 NEEDS a replacement frame and I've restored 3 Defenders and can safely say I would never even attempt to do a frame swap on a D2...

Copy that…good to see that there are vendors catering to the needs of LR owners (and that's not being sarcastic)

I actually thought the same thing with a few d90, 110, 130 swaps under my belt.... but the d2 is by far the easiest ever.

No internal wires... simple swap of rad arms and control arms,,, easy body mounts.. Its a clean job

Copy that…if you can get the bolts off without using MAP gas, every type of penetrating oil ever created and a BFH

What's a D1 frame swap like?

For what it's worth the 110 swap is trivial. The only "hard" part is moving the dash and screwing in the wing-to-bulkheaad screws.

sure, in a shop with a lift...chip shot...short of that, buy a different D2

Seriously, this is something beyond 98% of those here

Every DII is going to have the same issues. If you have a rusty DII that needs nothing other than a frame I could see doing this. Definitely not something you could do without a lift.

I'm sure there is a demand and that is great for vendors. I just lol because $2300 +another say $250 to ship I'm guessing, means you've got $2500 before you even get started. If you have a lift great. If not your going to pay a shop what 1500 or 2k to do the swap? I get that if your frame is shot but the rest of the truck is mint I suppose you could justify it. I just can't see dropping 3k into a truck that is only worth 3-4k. Being from the northeast I've seen many d2's with rusted frames and if the frame is rusted they are usually rusted elsewhere. I guess I'm just a lazy cheapfuck.

I would figure 40-60 hours of shop time for the job with new brake lines, so probably more like $4-8k for labor alone. Definitely not worth it on a lot of Discos, but I could see spending the money on some.

Well then it definitely makes sense to put 6-8k into a truck thats going to worth 4-6k when your done. If the hg's are done.
