D2 on 35"s?

It seems that not many people have put anything bigger than a 33 on a D2, so I hope to get some input from the few that have, or those with D1s on 35s. I currently have 255/85/16 (33.6") BFG MTs on my DII, and want to put on 35s this summer. I know you have to upgrade pretty much everything to pull it off, but who has done it, and what results did you get? I plan to put the following on the truck

Drivetrain:
ARB or DL Rear Locker
TruTrac Front LSD
GBR HD Rear Shafts
GBR Rebuilt F&R Driveshafts
GBR 4.11 Gears
Im trying to find some HD front shafts

Suspension:
5" RTE springs
Bilstein 7100 or Rancho Shocks
Longer Bumpstops
RTE Watts Links
RTE F&R radius arms

The truck will have a SG bumper on the front and my custom rear bumper on the rear, so there wont be any clearance issues there, and I have no problem at all taking a sawzall or cut wheel to my sheetmetal. I think that I will have enough suspension lift to fit the tires with minimal trimming.

Ive read that people have problems keeping D2s together with anything bigger than a 33" tire, but with the above gear on the truck Im hoping that it will work just fine. Post up any info you might have for me, thanks.

Sounds like a strong set up..just not sure the extra inch of tire is worth the money. Your disco looks mean as hell on the 255/85 already. Good Luck with whatever you decide. Id be happy to get a 285 under mine...but I dont want to get into re-gearing. How are the stock gears turning those 255/85??

Where you'll run into a clearance issue is on the sliders. You'll have to cut roughly 2" off each end & cap 'em off.

Yes I just did get the 33s a few weeks ago. I'm moving to AZ in august and want to leave for there with a super tough drivetrain setup, and a really good suspension setup. Im still deciding between 35s or 36s though. I started another new business and things are looking like they are going to be much better than I ever anticipated, read that as I'll have $1000-$1200 per week to put towards building up my D2 :D Below is what I am currently planning on throwing under my rusty pos, total build cost is going to be around $7000 including tires, which i am still undecided on. Im pretty confident that I'll be building one of the flexiest and burliest D2s out there as of now

Suspension Components (all from Rovertym)

5? Springs
Bilstein 7100 Series Shocks
Front Lower Shock Mount
Rear Spring Retainers
Brake Lines
ABS Lines
Watts Link
Front and Rear Spring Wedges
Adjustable Panhard Rod
Front and Rear Radius Arms

Drivetrain Components

GBR HD Rear Axleshafts
Front HD Shafts from someone?
Detroit Rear Locker
TT Front LSD
GBR 4.11 R&P Gears
GBR Rebuilt Front Prop Shaft
GBR Rebuilt Rear Prop Shaft

Marc, im currently searching for someone whos making HD front shafts for the D2, Im not even going to attempt this project unless I can find some. And cutting and capping my sliders will be easy, ive got a welder and all of the tools. And yes I am crazy.

damn son let me get in on that 'business'.

I'm waiting til i'm past college to do anything, but your disco is SICK already. Greg Davis is the only person i know with a D2 on 35s, check out his pics page he lists alot of mods.

If you are experienced then I'd say check Pirate and do a toyota conversion rather than trying to keep the rover axles. You'll end up with more strength and lower cost plus the parts to fix toy axles are readily available everywhere unlike rover parts.

Why stop at 35"? I want to see someone step it up to 44" I don't care how you do it, suspension lift, body lift, chopping sheet metal, etc...

Mike Noe is in here somewhere with 35s on a DII, search him out. His setup seems pretty solid. Steve at RTE has 35s on a DI, but I have seen a truck or two there at the shop that looked to be that big.

Get ready to fix stuff. 35's break things.

Hmmm, like CV's?....:D

Don, FYI, wheeling in AZ is nothing like wheeling in the midwest.
anything along the Colorado plateau will be really really hard on your rig.
stock up on CV's, i keep about a half dozen in my garage at all times.

w/ 35's you WILL break CV's

i see Moab trips in your future :D

Marc,

I race for and manage an MTB race team, and am trying to get all of this work done before my season gets into full swing. This summer I'll be traveling to the following places for races: Monterey CA, Vernon NJ, Fayetteville AR, Banner Elk NC, West Dover VT, Park City and Moab UT, Aspen CO, Whitstler BC, and probably a few others too. I will be doing alot of wheeling in and on the way to all of these locations :D and once I move to Phoenix I do see plenty of Moab trips to come.

I am still trying to find some HD CVs for the D2. If i can find them I'll run them and keep the stock ones in the back to use as spares.

Don,
I also talked to Steve at RTE about doing something very similar, but I only plan on going up to a 34 in tire, for now. I currently run 265?s and have 4.11?s, TT front and rear.

CV?s Unlimited was putting a quote together for Steve. It was going to be spec?d out with 300M axles and 4130 cage and balls, priced around $1,200.

I haven?t really studied my front end, and I?m sure this has come up before, but could it be possible to have axles made with standard u-joints? Is it a space issue?

If I had that kinda of cash, I'd dump the D2 and get a D90 and build the shit out of that, you'll like the shorter wheel base, and the avaialblilty of real parts for a trail rig. Ask Greg Davis, he's now putting 2 1/2 ton rockwell's under his D2 to handle a tire bigger than 33's. Also, look for a higher gear ratio, 4.11's are gonna be to short for 35's. Don't get me wrong, try it, you may like it, but the Rover axle's aren't made to push that much rubber. One other thing, out here with much steeper trails, higher isn't better. you want to keep it low, so the truck isn't tippy (is that a word). Even with the new hd stuff, your gonna eat cv's, not to mention driveshafts when pushing a rig as heavy as a D2. just some thoughts from lovely Tucson, AZ...
