01 d2 81k

2 things have happened: it got cold here and i had the engine swapped out. now, torque converter takes forever to kick in. in the mornings it takes 10-15 min hwy driving to kick in and sometimes i have to move the shifter from d to n and back then it will kick in. any ideas? there was no issues with it before the swap/cold set in. my first clue was worsening gas mileage then i started looking at the rpms when i noticed it was happening.

thanks.

It is normal operation for the torque convertor to not lock up until it is warmed up. I don't know why that is, but they all do it.

i mean that the torque converter is not engaging as it should. i get on the highway in the am around 55-65 mph and the rpms are 2.5-2.75k. 15 min or so down the road it finally kicks in (engages/can feel it) and the rpms drop down to 2k as should normally happen. it just shouldnt take this long for it to happen. this d2 i snew to me but my d1 never did this and i have made this AM commute hundreds of times. it didnt do it before the engine swap/cold set in.

pt is prob right=low fluid level + cold making it act up.

this is my first d2. i am looking through the rave but can only find transmission fluid change procedure. anyone know the fluid level check procedure?

Look under Maintenance > Procedures > Automatic Gearbox Page 126.

Put gearbox into Park, undo LEVEL plug, fill untiul a 2mm bead of fluid runs out. Replace plug.

Check the colour (color) of the oil while you are there, black oil means something is burning up in the clutches.

I am 100% certain this is normal. Every DII does this if it is cold and you start driving at higher speeds. A D1 locks up at 52 mph IIRC.

This guy is correct,

The transmission ecu will not allow the converter to lock until the engine is warm

I remember 160 degrees for lock up and or 4th gear. It's been colder then usual in the 20's.
Takes mine about 5 minutes.

hmm, interesting. so, i checked the fluid level and it is good. also the fluid color looks new. turns out that dude above was right and it will not go into 4th gear until warm. this takes about 10 min of driving and today was in the 50 degree range. the engine temp on the cluster was up to normal way before it kicked into 4th. once it goes into 4th the torque converter kicks right in as normal.

you guys say this is normal but it just doesnt seem so. my d1 never did this and this truck never did it that i noticed until after the engine swap. i did own it last year during the tail end of the cold months and did not notice it.

am i crazy?

I have a D2, there is a noticeable difference between summer and winter in how long it takes to lockup. If it is not slipping or hard shifting then I would not worry about it.

Maybe you should just replace the transmission. The user ashtrans is from Ashcroft Transmissions, who is probably one of, if not the, biggest suppliers of rebuilt Land Rover transmissions.

As previously stated, a D1 does not have an electronically controlled transmission. A D1 torque converter should lock up at 52 mph IIRC. A DII will lock up whenever the TCM tells it to do so, which will not be until it is warm.
