D2 with ARB Snorkel... do you recognize this part???

I changed my air filter the week before last. When I opened the air filter box and removed the air filter, I found this inside of it. It looks to be the same shape as my ARB Snorkel, so I am wondering if it goes in the snorkel somewhere?? It is made of foam.

Does anyone know what this is and where it goes???

Thanks in advance! :)

Thanks Paul :)

Should I try to put it back on? If so, is it a difficult task?

Thanks again! :)

Hi Jamie,

I would surely try to put it back if I were you. I seem to remember that you spend a lot of time door handle deep in Florida muck. You will want as tight a seal as you can get on your breather. It shouldn't be to difficult. Just dissassemble and reassemble using good 100% silicone. Be sure to let the silicone dry at least a day before running so you don't chance gunking up your MAF.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks :)

I am not very good with glue or silicone. I was kind of hoping I could slip it over the snorkel parts and push/wedge it down into the space where it should be.

I wonder if it will hurt anything if I just leave it off??

It sure sounds like one of those jobs where I might cause more problems trying to fix it... if you know what I mean. ;)

Thanks again! :)

If I recall that piece goes on the inside of the truck IE the OEM filter housing and the part of the safari snorkel piece coming in from the wheel-well. There should be a couple nuts to take off, pull back a bit and slip it in there and tighten back up. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Mike

I'd say ditch the foam piece and use sensor safe silicone. I do not remember that part from when I installed my snorkel, but I did gunk the whole thing up with lots of silicone and even in FL mud and deep water the air box always stay dry; now the coil packs are another story.

Jamie,

My ARB might be slightly different from yours (D1 vs D2) but that looks like the grommet that goes around the hole where the snorkle passes through to the airbox. On mine a large silicone rubber hose passes through the fender to mate the snorkle to the airbox. The hose is secured at both ends with hose clamps.

If this is the grommet, it could keep the silicone hose from having a hole chaffed ino it by the sheetmetal. It will not keep water out of the engine compartment or the airbox.

On the other hand, if it is a gasket that joins the snorkel part to the airbox (the equivelent of my silicone hose, it could be critical in a deep wading situation, and also a place where the air supply could injest dust.

have fun.

Thanks for all of your replies. :)

The strange thing is that it was under the air filter, at the bottom of the filter box.

To my knowledge, I am the only person who has changed my air filter. I'm pretty certain that my dealership would have noted it if they had changed it.

That said, whenever I change my air filter, I always use damp paper towels to clean out any dust in the bottom of the box and then dry it with an air gun before replacing the filter. (no, I do not blow the air gun into any of the holes)

Anyway, I might open my hood later this afternoon and take a closer look at it.

I'll post back whenever I get to it.

Thanks again! :)

I opened it up and as far as I could tell... it went between the snorkel and the wall of my truck where they meet... at least the shape was the same... and there was a small indentation of that size that looked like it should be there to help seal the area. Also, there were apparent "air gaps" when I gently pressed on the snorkel parts (where it is against the truck wall) that were not there before.

I removed the 2 plastic grommets that hold that part of the snorkel against the truck wall to get the foam part in there. I couldn't quite get it to stay in place because the foam part seems "tired". I finally got it to "sort of" stay in place and closed it up real quick before it could fall down again.

I reapplied the dialectric silicone compound around that area... where the snorkel meets the truck wall... so, hopefully it is sealed again. I guess I'll check it in a few days to see if it stayed in place. I'm guessing it will end up back in my air box if it falls off again?

In the meantime, I'll be sure to stay out of water that is the depth of my hood. ;)

Anyway, thanks SO MUCH for all of your help. :)
