I just called my dealer to see what they use/recomend..and they recomend Mobil Clean 5w-30..which was on the "approved" list of HTHS and ACEA amounts from earlier in the thread.

Incidently, the owners manual from my '04 D2 recomends 10w-40 Castrol that meets an ACEA A2 rating. Not condoning..just saying....

So is Royal Purple 10w40 no good for my 03 disco? Guess I need to change it out. Installing a oil pressure gauge atm and may have to change the oil in a few days anyway if something is screwed up with my oil pressure.

Has anyone used Auto-Rx in their Disco ? Seems like it would be good to use for someone who is thinking of switching to synthetic from conventional, especially for higher mileage engines. I don't think this would solve the leaks but may dissolve all the sludge buildup.

Royal Purple 10w40 is better than most oils for your disco it has a HTHS of 4.05.

Eh, I wouldn't do it. Where is all that sludge Going?

I agree with Chris when he says, "if you have to add an oil additive you're not using the right oil." ;) (chris said this right? lol)

I would only use some GM EOS when breaking in an engine, but I think they discontinued it.

If you want a good conventional oil that will "clean" your engine use Rotella 15w40. The white jug. Don't let the price deceive you, it is great stuff and you can find it Anywhere. even walmart for cheap.

Watching "Horsepower TV" and they are rebuilding an Olds 455 flat tappet engine.

They mentioned the engine needing a higher ZDDP content due to the flat tappets, and how it has been removed from most modern oils due to EPA regulations. They then went on to say what additives they could run as a break in oil, and how some people use Rotella diesel oil (as we have discussed here) due to it's higher ZDDP content. They then went on to say NOT to run it long term as it would make too much sludge. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing..just wondering everyone's thoughts. Chris? What do you think?

It is really hard for diesel oil to sludge because they have way too many detergents. The conventional Rotella diesel oil 15w40 Could in a very long OCI (+10K OCI) produce some sludge if all the detergants and additives get used up. But if you use a synthetic it will most likely Not produce sludge since I'm certain Rotella synthetic 5w40 oil is a Group III with a very good add pack, since Shell oil is the same company that provides Pennzoil and they are known for having a stout oil with Group III with a very good AP.

They either messed up what they were saying or they meant 15K-25K OCI (Oil Change Interval). You will be fine running rotella. In most cars/trucks people run rotella or delvac or any kind of diesel oil really for 10K miles.

ZDDP is a good protection for Flat Tappet engines. It is true that Most modern oils are only going to have around 800ppm. For a Flat Tappet 1000+ppm is great protection. You can actually just read through the product sheets of various oils and they tell you right there. A lot of Xw40 weight oils and High Mileage oils as well as Racing oils all have above 1000ppm. Some even have 1100-1300, with some racing oils having up to 1500ppm.
