So who else is following that auction and wondering what the break even point would be to buy it and then rip that diesel plant and 5 speed out of that Rover and put it in your better one and then part out the rest?

I didn't want to post about it anywhere because it seems the general public has no idea that it is WAY too cheap right now. Seems like it's getting traction on the Rover boards today tho.

Discovery models have a pretty poor reputation on BaT for all the typical internet reasons: someone "said" they sucked so they suck. I figure it's going to go to a LR guy for the reason I stated above, then again the seller claims it's rust-free so could be built into a good rig.

My motor is at 188k but had a new top end, etc, etc and runs fine, Auto tranny is fine, too. Only thing I dislike is the mpg but I also figure I'm not going to get another 50k out of it, either.

I'm probably not the guy to get it if it stays cheap but who knows? It would make a much better daily driver until something goes to shit with the electrical and then I could make the swap into mine...

I'm betting 5k at least. I'm thinking that bidding won't really happen much until the last day, then it will be two or three rover guys bidding against each other.

Ahhh. No not the one. This guy I was talking about put a MB diesel in a Disco. No where near as clean. He drove it but never registered it and it broke down/got impounded. Total mess.

This one seems much cleaner. I wonder if Zombie did that job. Looks pretty good.

I've never seen it come through my shop. Beware that since its a '98 it will not be OBDII compliant, so emissions may be an issue for many of you. I have a '98 300, but i dont have to deal with emissions in WA on a diesel that lightweight.

Curious, why wouldn't a 98 be oBD II compliant?

I would venture a guess that it's not the 1998 Disco which isn't OBD2 compliant (my otherwise identical Disco is), but the 1995 300TDI engine which has no electronics. The GEMS engine management system found on a 1998 4.0 V8, which is relatively primitive by today's standards, is highly sophisticated compared to the 300TDI.

Saw that BaT this am, concur it is way too cheap at the moment given the caliber of truck it seems to be-even with the heinous color, matching rear bumper and shit-tastic TR front bumper. I'd strongly consider just unghetto-ing it and leaving it stock as a DD.

Find it amazing that it is sitting at 1,500 when another 300 TDi D1 likely went for above 10k assuming Goose got anywhere near what he was looking for on this truck: http://www.defendersource.com/forum/f8/1997-discovery-1-300tdi-super-nice-78633.html

I keep thinking about taking a look around for now importable diesel Discos from Europe just to have as a stock truck to run around in.

It's either a great deal, or they cooked it by driving it like a Cummins. I would never touch a 300TDI if they were driving it with out a pyro.

There are occasionally really nice 3 door ones in France and Italy. Check autoscout regularly.

BaT has a different kind of auction procedure, any bid within two minutes of closing automatically resets the clock to two minutes so it can really get kind of wild at the end.

Not a bad deal for sure. A friend of mine was selling 300tdi kits for $6k about 4 years ago. So at $7900 you could strip it out and put it in what ever you wanted, or drive it as is. I know if I had a series truck sitting around I would have considered it for that money.

Nice find, but I think that truck doesn't become eligible for import for another 5 years. I'm no expert on the regs, but my understanding is 25 years is the minimum age for a US import.
