Diesel in a d1

I'm seriously considering sourcing a 200tdi or 300tdi from UK and putting it in a 1995 NAS d1. My question is has anyone on this forum in the USA done this? I'd sure like to pick his brain about parts and where they were obtained.
Thanks in advance
Gordon Sitts :)

1. Technically it's illegal becase they were neve certified in the US (not that people haven't done it). I'd really bet you'd never be able to register one in California.

2. I'd bet you'll spend so much money on the conversion you'd have to keep the Disco for 20 years for it to pay off.

3. I don't know about the rest of the US but around here diesel is usally the same cost or more as super unleaded.

4. I just saw a 300 tdi motor for sale by someone in the SF area on some board someplace but I don't remember where. If I come across it I'll put a post in here with the info.

Regards,
JH

Check Rovers Down South (roversdownsouth.com)

I have a buddy with a 300tdi in his 94 Defender and I think that is where he sourced it (but I'm not sure...) Also, a shop in Loveland, Co called Sirfoss (sirfosslandrover.com)

The owner is Mike Sirfoss, and he is familiar with that conversion and quoted a friend
a conversion for under $10,000 (although I don't know the specifics, so don't quote me on that...)

I'm not sure of the legality in CA, but I know that you have the right year of truck because anything newer has OBD II, and will fail inspection since the 300tdi doesn't have it...

About legalities, Where I live we don't have any emisions inspections. I don't plan to sell the beast when I'm done. It will be a sort of forever landrover. Typically my 4x4's end up living out there last days on our farm .About fuel prices I get about 14mpg on my 96d1 the tdi get about 28 even if the fuel costs are higher I win. About payback I drive 55k a year... It won't take that long.

Check out eastcoastrover.com. They used to have a section that went step by step through the conversion on a D1. It is pretty involved... Their article will also tell you how
expensive it is, but they put all new parts in. A used engine and transmission would be alot cheaper. My friend's Defender was under 10 Grand start to finish. He had it done by a guy in Kansas. I can supply you with his contact info if you are interested.

As far as emissions, Denver has some of the strictest laws outside of California, and my friend's Defender is happily registered here...

Seems to me I read that ECR wasn't doing the conversion anymore because of costs and lack of customers wanting the conversion (probably because of the cost). Not that the original poster was asking for someone else to do it for him, but ECR doesn't seem to shy away from too much, which sort of tells the tale right there.

everyone says how cost intensive the conversion is but can anyone actually give a total cost.

that, right there, sounds like trouble.
you might be tangling with some serious characters you go that route.
I wouldn't want to find you mysteriously crushed under a IH 2.8 PS in the midwest.

I have no idea what JSQ is saying, but my friend's truck has a very professional
install and is the coolest Defender I have ever seen, plus he gets almost 30mpg. It was
done by Jim Pendleton's shop and was not crushed (or whatever JSQ said)... We are not
all rednecks out here in the heartland.

Tom,

I sent them an email recently to get more info and they never replied so that might give you an idea of where they are with that. Also it sounds like it could get pretty expensive by the time you're done.

Thanks for all the replys I am really serious about this and will use the info above as needed. I will be doing all the work myself and am really trying to get a list of parts I'll need from the UK. so that I can get them all at once. I am also looking for reputable used parts suppliers in the UK who might be able to supply the complete list I will hopfully generate soon. I could really use some help in getting with the right supplier. Does anone have any thought on this??
Thanks again
Gordon

Since the dollar is so weak I would recommend that you find a supplier other than from England. Your going to pay near double for all the parts.
