hey guys,www.seriestrek.com has an adapter for a manuel/but no an automatic.on his site he shows were he modified the oil pan,and if i remember correctly moved the stock location of the pump/filter? he has what looks to be a very professional set-up going.and was actually interested in the mercedes diesel 617 into a disco 1 auto.with slight power mods.20-30 hp w/ slight torque.base power is already that of the 300tdi.but the mercedes is very simple motor and around in abundance.

How much them merc diesels tend to cost? I was lookin at the 4bt cummins route, but that fairly $$$ even if you can sell the scrap aluminum from the bread truck

locally i've seen them in the car still car body rusted, perfect drive train for $1000-$1200. about average just got to look.some of those original engines are legendary to like 2 or 3million miles no rebuild only like a rebuilt fuel pump a few times.i llike the 4bys but to heavey, and i would not want to see the long term effects on the joints, axles and every other part.those suckers are heavy.

Weight wouldn't be that big of a issue, you'll need to re-do the suspension for the 4bt. Just another added cost of the swap. I know Jim (trust me, that series is AWESOME, rode in it and drivin it, but it is slow), and we talked about this swap into a D2, just too much shit to deal with when it comes to the sub-systems. In a D1, with some creative engineering, ya it may work with, but by the time you get done with the engine mods, your at the price of getting a LR motor which will that almost bolt right up...

I've been planning a TD5 conversion...Then I drove one. The thing was a dog. No power until just before 2k rpm. So, if you're planning to do a diesel conversion stay away from the TD5. The guy at the local dealer said that the only way to get decent power from them is to chip tune. And even then, according to him, they don't work well with an auto gearbox. Oh well, time to rethink this.

I drove one "Down Under" - it was OK, but I agree that down low they are a dog. They are a higher revving diesel than almost anything out there though. Slow to rev, but rev almost like a gasser in RPM's, very odd feeling. I wasn't to crazy about it either.

That said, you do learn how to drive it after a couple days with it. This one was a manual truck, the auto would most likely be a pig unless it shifted fast enough to not loose the boost in the narrow power band. Doubt it.
