I currently own a '98 DI and looking at purchasing a DII. Is there a significant difference between the '99-'02 and the '03-'04 DII?

Does the 4.6 have it's own set of gremlins or is it just a bigger 4.0? (usual leaks, valves, etc.) :confused:

I love the 4.6 in my '03. If you have the money to buy new, wait until the '05 LR3 comes out and you should be able to get a good deal on an '04 DII. That way you have in the cab CDL integrated straight from the factory.

4.0 vs 4.6

rw229 i'm new to the forum, i have a 95 Disco with 5-speed, 4.6 motor with RPI cam, Tornado chip, Borla exhaust, cold ram air, longer intake track with 260 % stiffer bar in front and 190% rear. This is a street car, you can almost eat off the bottom. It runs circles around the newer 4.0's and the new 4.6 powered Discos. The 4.4 litre Range Rovers are fun to blow away also. This is what Rover should of made years ago! I can lock the steering in 3rd at 500 rpm to 4,400 in 5th. A very flexable engine. Yes i did smog and passed with HC at idle,4 of 100 ppm max, 2,500 test, 5 of 180 ppm max, Co .01% idle, 0.000 at 2,500. With all the new electronics on the "plastic generation" Rovers the owners will spend twice what they paid for them in repairs at the rip off dealers. As i'm an aircraft mechanic i've got the upper hand on repairing my Disco with the help of the factory repair manual and a complete parts manual (came from dealer). Hope i didn't offend just had to chime in. NUFF B S N 4 NOW,Carl, ..............................o&o>.................................

Thanks for the input guys.

I drove the '04 yesterday... it's very nice and the 4.6 has plenty of power, though the interior seems much more cramped than my D1. The tilt steering wheel only moves up about a 1/4" :confused:

I'm not sure what to do at this point and if the '04 is worth the premium over one that's a couple years older.

I have to agree with everyone on this one. When my 4.0 is in the shop they lend me a new one with a 4.6. Very noticable around town. No experiance off road but if I was to choose one to buy it would be one with a 4.6 in it.

It really depends on how fast I'm driving, but if I keep the RPM at or below 2500 (about 70mph) I get about 16 mpg on the highway. In town, about 12 mpg.

This is on an '03 with 3" OME lift, 265/75R16 BFG MT's, ARB bull bar with XD9000 Warn winch, and Slickrock fab rocksliders (so lots of extra weight).

Definitely get the 04 4.6 you will have no regrets, bigger motor stock and a cdl, Wes if you gotta ask, i will just say it's not a civic, and beemer your an idiot. I've got a blah blah blah, that's faster than blah blah. I would say most people on this board have factory repair manuals, and their not F-18s that's why we love them because we can work on them, save it newbie.

ive got a 3.9 DI and a 4.6 P38....

i must say i LOVE the power of the 4.6.... but the gas mileage leaves somethign to be desired (NOT that my 3.9 gets much better gas milage...):

i've only had my
P38 for 7 weeks now, and in that 7 weeks i've driven it arpox 5K
miles

5,000 miles divided by
7 weeks
========
714 miles per week divided by
14 miles per gallon
========
51 gallons of gas a week, times
$2.33 per gallon for super
========
$118 of gas a week, times
52 weeks in a year
========
$6,181 yearly gas cost IF gas doesnt get more expensive!!!!!

better translated the total cost = bitchy wife saying "why the hell did you buy that @#$!%#@$ gas hog anyway!!!! isnt one gas guzzeling LR enough?!?!?

A V6 Honda minivan gets 18 in the city, and my 4.6 DII gets 16. Is there really a difference? Sure the mileage looks bad when you glance at the sticker, but when you glance at a bunch of stickers you realize that there aint alot of choices for an efficient box on wheels.

Thanks for the info...I thought I would ask as I am debating on getting another Disco or something else for my wife, and since it'll be the wife's car, it will stay totally stock. But with the current gas prices in our neck of the woods, another disco may not be a good decision financially thus the question.

thanks again. :)

keep up or park it in California

draaraonr, yes i'm an idiot in your little mind, for one getting another Rover as the wife liked the style. Back years ago dad ended up with a 58 diesel Rover in a horse trade, man that thing was a slow pig against big American cars on the highway back then and off road. Here in California were speed is the thing on highways and mountain roads the Disco again was a ill handling slow top heavy warthog on ice. To pull a 800# tent trailer loaded in the mountains was a hindrance to traffic flow with a 3.9 motor, hence the 4.6. Since resale value of a used Rover is dirt I might as well have fun with the "Limey Lemon" until it breaks
down big time which they do like clock work, scrap it out, sell everything but the engine and trans. I have a as found cherry Morgan that needs a engine and trans, that will run Webers. As i'm a licensed A & P mechanic reliability is paramont, a thing Rover is not that's why you stated everyone has a repair manual. I like asphalt, you must like dirt, we are different, so why not respect other opinions like mine? I'll refrain from calling you an idiot back as i'm a better person. Also i'm a "Newbie" to this forum but have hundreds of replies with other forums. Take care "little one". Carl...........................o&o>............................

what is it about A&P's and their constant need to tell others that they are a "licensed A&P mechanic"
:rolleyes: i mean really, it's just a 2 year undergrad certificate. time to come down off the arrogance stool. c'mon now, you probably change seat backs for a living

I'll refrain from calling you an idiot back as i'm a better person. Also i'm a "Newbie" to this forum but have hundreds of replies with other forums. Take care "little one". Okay so I'm not an idiot just a little one. you prove your better person point so well.

rw229 i'm new to the forum, i have a 95 Disco with 5-speed, 4.6 motor with RPI cam, Tornado chip, Borla exhaust, cold ram air, longer intake track with 260 % stiffer bar in front and 190% rear. All I hear is blah, blah, blah. My rover is this fast and all my new engine parts are this and that. At least you admit its a street car, but its like trying to take a corvette off road, While I could spend the money and time to make it happen it's just a waste of time and will never be worth while.
So with all that yes Beemer you are still an idiot. I think you helped prove the point again with your last point so I owe you a thanks for that.

Ok, we have established that an '04 is the sh!t.. Should all of my modifications from my 99 dII fit? If so, how much of a market is there for a 99 dII with brand new '04 stock parts (suspension, bumpers, tires/wheels)?
