DII Front Flange Bolts for the Rear Drive Shaft ?????

Hi, (I already Searched!)
On my 2001 DII, I need to replace the four bolts that hold the front of the rear drive shaft to the flange located inside the parking break.

One of the nuts cam off completely and I replaced it with a random nut from the hardware store that had the same thread. One other of the four bolts is stripped and the nut is loose so I can only tighten it so far but not torque it down or it will spin.

So I am trying to find out what size, length and thread these four bolts are so I can get replacements. I believe the head of the bolt and the size of the nut may be somewhat special to fit into where they need to go, aka- not completely standard, but I'm not sure. The dealership wants $7 per bolt and $7 per nut! If I know exactly what I need I can probably get them from the local fastener supplier for pennies.

My plan is to:
1- Remove the front of the rear drive shaft.
2- Remove the parking break housing.
3- Remove the flange that comes out of the transfer case, I believe a 33 or 34mm socket is required for this.
4- With the flange removed the old bolts can be removed and the new bolts installed.
5- Reinstall the flange
6- Reinstall the parking break housing.
7- Reconnect the front of the rear drive shaft.

Can anyone help me with the specs on the four bolts?

Has anyone done this before? Any hints, tricks or cautions?

Thanks
Brian

These bolts are 3/8-24 and about 1-3/4" long. There is absolutely nothing special about them other than the fact that you really should use grade eight for this application. The nuts are nylon-insert lock nuts.

When you get the flange off, there is one BIG-ass snap ring, gently prise it such that you can rotate it to remove the bolts and slide the new one in.

Good luck, getting the nut of can be a PITA. Torque the ever-loving piss out of it on reassembly and use some loc-tite as it is another nylon-insert and they should not be re-used, but I don't think you'll find a replacement at the corner hardware store.

the nut is a 30 MM to remove the flange.

the nut will need to be removed with a impact and there is also a felt crush washer in there that will need to be replaced as well.

I just did this on my D1 the other day as I had broken off one of the bolts during a pre trip looksy.

Wow P.T.,
Thank you so much!

Do you know if the size of the nut for the flange? 33mm or 34mm somewhere around there; I'll need to buy a new socket, I don't have anything that big.

While we're at it do you have any idea of the thread count and pitch for that big nut on the flange? There is an industrial specialty fastener supplier around her and you never know what they may have for a new nylock.

Thanks again for all your help and sharing your knowledge!

Thanks Muskyman!
Hey, same Muskyman from ExPo, cool!

Any idea on the size, thread and pitch of the bolt that this 30mm nut threads onto?

I'm trying to get all the materials I need, such as the crush washer and possibly a new 30mm nylock nut, before I get into it so that I don't have to deal with driving around town in front wheel drive with the center diff locked...

the nut is stocked at the dealer as is the crush washer, I really dont know the exact spec...sorry

yes I am one in the same Muskyman...I doubt you will see anyone else in the rover community racing to use that screen name :D

Nice to see you over here, the reputation here is worse then the reality. There are alot of great people with lots of rover specific information. Yes there is a bit of flamming but the NO BS attitude is what keeps the information accurate and the site busy so that over all the years its been here it has accumulated a pile of information all in one place.

I used to frequent here more a couple of years ago, I posted up more too back then but it looks like my account may have been reset as it is only showing 9 posts.

DiscoWeb is a great resource and collection of information.

By the way, I just noticed you are in Barrington, I grew up in LaGrange and lived in the City for several years. I think my brother lives in Barrington or has an office there....

Thanks again for the help,
Brian
