DII - how to make water tight

Mine did not have cracked breathers.

Best guess is water ingress through the seals. Drained and refilled it like 3 times. And yes it is nearly impossible to get to the breather without taking alot of stuff apart.

Pas pump, water pump, alternator, cruise pump, all dead. Air box was dry.

I have never thought it difficult to get to the breathers, but I will say that it is really to upgrade the breathers when the console is out for a CDL upgrade.

after swamping my d2 and losing the tranny ecu, i cleaned it up and waterproofed it with some circuit board silicone waterproofing spray that is black light sensitive. have not had problems with that since.

even with a snorkel taking water up to the sunroofs will get water into the engine!
The snorkel only goes to the bottom of the roof
What I meant is that the freaking sunroofs do not even keep the rain out - and one would expect that to be watertight, never mind the rest of the vehicle. :smilelol:

The sunroofs aren't even water tight!

Sunroofs leak on all vehicles. Even Hondas and Toyotas. It's just that good vehicles have adequate drains that keep the water that has leaked in, out of the interior. On my honda, I can leave the sun roof open an inch, and I still won't get wet.

The drains on land rovers have probably all snapped off by now. That's why I looked for no sunroofs on my 2003.

Jessuss.... I love offroading but I'd never do that to my DII, maybe if I had a TDi 90 or something.

At what point did they think it might be too deep?

Well I'm sure he knew I was deep. But once you get momentum/bow wake going on a water crossing you don't really want to stop or put it in reverse... I just don't think he knew it was THAT deep..

Question for the offroad gurus here. How the hell do you expect to get out of that and what kind of damage could be anticipated to the truck?

Flood damage, ECU is probably gone and quite possibly never getting the electronics back to normal. Probably flooded the tranny and maybe hydrolocked the engine. I would suspect total loss, but if the vehicle was off before all went bad you may be able to bring it to New Mexico and leave it out for a summer...

when the water came over the front of the hood i stopped threw it in reverse and the truck just sank. it was all soft sand. i didnt gun it trying to get thru. it just dug itself down.

i have done many water crossings in this truck and i have gotten stuck a handful of time in water crossings, most were being high centered in rutted out water holes.

we pulled it out which took 30 mins because the rescue truck broke a CV during recovery. all the ECU's and fuses were pulled, dried and replaced, it cranks turns over but spark then dies.

the snorkel kept the truck running a little longer if it were without it, the snorkel def has helped me make crossings and get out of being stuck in water holes without taking water into the intake plenum. The problem here was three fold, the only water proofed ECU was the tranny, with water 5 inches from the top of the windshield all of the ECU's would have needed to be water proofed, secondly the fuse boxes would need to be waterproofed, and thirdly the air intake box needs to be sealed tight and breathers extended for everything that holds oil.

even if we got that truck running and i drained and replaced every fluid i dont think it would have survived a 4 hour drive back to NY.
