We use this stuff called CHF-11S. Its made by Pentosin and it was used in most late model BMWs and Jags. That "special" fluid in the D2s is really really light weight and this stuff is pretty much an exact match, even in color. Plus I believe it was 1/2 the cost of the dealer stuff.

Available at Napa now.

I've known an awful lot of folks who've used ATF in their DII PAS systems.

ace is texaco cold climate, it has a gm p/n cross too and is cheaper, or supposedly oreillys has a cold climate fluid that matches, but i havent looked at it...

are the pumps "rebuilt"? (loosley, seems they just clean them and repackage them..)

I just replaced the steering box in my 03 but I'm still leaking fluid. Is regular old power steering fluid no good? I think thats what my mechanic put in it after the change.

Any hydraulic fluid will work fine. I'm not sure about the castrol brake fluid and Lucas swill combo mentioned above though. Also the pumps mainly fail at the paper gasket which has nothing to do with the fluid just poor materials.

If you must refill because you replaced the box or something I'd go with ATF. If you are just topping off I'd use the Rover stuff.

synthetic eco friendly semi mineral based light green
its whats in the rover ace fluid bottles, maps over to a texaco or GM fluid, they make it here in US too, its usually rebadged TRW stuff

Thanks for the info guys. I had been having trouble tracking down the right stuff. This seems to be a perfect match for what is in there already.

older rovers, d1's have ATF/dex3
my 03 had green in there from factory.
go buy ace fluid rom your dealer pour in see thru dixie cup
buy chf 11s, smell both rub both on fingers then let me know, after you buy Ace Fluid from LR Dealer and compare

Mind you this is the same green fluid in my BMW, Audi and Porsche steering systems. Go figure..most EU manufacturers have switched to this green coloured fluid, as its far more enviro friendly and IMHO just as good so long as you change it every 50k miles/4 years

some may argue the red synths last longer and they do, but they are pretty bad for mother earth
seems I get smoother steering with this in there, sometimes less powerful feeling but smoother less notchy and nicer

whats in LR3 steering systems? Same ace fluid or different?(Sorry dunno!)

Lr3 uses Ace. 03-05 RR as well and IIRC so does 05-09 sport and 06-09 RR.

Gem i think you are right that pentosin is the same as texaco cold climate (ace fluid)

in the old discos land rover said refill the system with what was in the system/they had either one right from the factory at that time. ATF is a higher detergant fluid, i wouldnt run it in the ACE system but it should be fine in the p/steering

I mentioned earlier in this thread that I replaced my steering gear box about a week ago and I'm still leaking fluid. It looks like it is coming out of the line going into the actual power steering pump. Is that a high pressure line that I have to replace completely or is it just a O ring?

I just did this a couple of weeks ago. I tried to change the O rings to stop the leak, but ended up having to replace to whole high pressure line. Not a fun job, I did it without taking out the radiator. Not sure if that would have been easier though. Good luck.
