So when I use the secret decoder my 2003 DII is suppose to have a 2.9 V-6 but it is clearly a V-8. Are the VINs ever wrong? All 3 VINs match.

Cheers

VIN = Vehicle Identification Number. In the USA we don't worry about the engine designation because they were only available with the V8. The only alternative was a diesel Td5. I think either you are misreading the VIN or your VIN interpeter is wrong as the V-6 was introduced with the Freelander and it was 2.5L or 3.2L.

Pretty sure I knew what a VIN was, I meant what is his VIN that we could read. Maybe he has something screwed up...

Actually, your VIN indicates an inline 6cyl, from all the decoders I have looked at. The "P" in the middle being the engine designator. Is it possible you have misread the number or it was damaged somehow so that it looks differant? Did you check the number in more than one place on the vehicle? It should be in the lower-left corner of the windscreen and also stamped into the bulkhead in the engine compartment, as well as the build-plate.
Adriatic04- no offense intended, please don't take it personally.

In SA I had a 2000 Defender 90 with a BMW 2.8 I6 petrol engine. That baby flew, they were limited to 160 km/h but that was simple to fix. AFAIK only the D90 and D110 came with this option between 1997 and 2000 to fill the gap left by the V8. I don't think the Discovery had that option, they were only available with TD5 and V8 at that time. Sigh....
Totally irrelevant to the original post.

All 3 VINs match. I think maybe all the online decoders must be wrong. It is definately a V8. Thanks everybody.

Wouldnt that be nice.

I had more engine problems in three years of owning a 3.0L I6 engine than in 11 years of LR ownership. I know it's just probably my bad luck, but my BMW X5 was a complete POS. In addition to my engine problems, I had to replace sway bar links, control arms, CV boots, window regulators, & two door handles. That's all that comes to mind. I'm sure there's more.

After one CV boot replacement on a friend's X5 in a North Las Vegas parking lot, I'd agree with that...

Tell me about it. As I got done finishing up the boot on the drivers side, I looked over to the passenger side and saw grease all over the tire and realized I was only half done changing boots. Man, that thing was a POS.
