It used to be people preferred the D1 because of fully floating axles and standard CDL built in.. I've owned my D2 for 15 years, and it's been a very "reliable" vehicle overall.. That's not to say it doesn't need constant attention, and I did have to rebuilt the engine.. Never left me on the trail and only twice needed to tow home, once then the engine blew and once for Crank Sensor.

I've owned 3 D1's and 4 D2's. I miss my last D1 all the time. But it was a rusty mess. I currently own 3 D2's. One has a frame that is on it's last leg. But has otherwise been super reliable. One has had an engine replaced at 105k miles and has been giving me fits ever since (randomly won't start). The last is a 99 with only 75k miles.

But I was going to build a real offroad rig, I'd start with the D1. I just like it better than the D2 for wheeling. Plus there is less electronic wizardry to fuck up your day.

Plus, once you own a Disco, then you start looking at Range Rover Classics, and before you know it you have 4 trucks parked in your driveway, of which only one is running at any given time. It's a slippery slope.
I am offended. The only non-running truck I have is in the garage, and it's a jeep.
Everything else is correct.

Well, if you're really gonna' do this, the FIRST thing to get is a decent OBD2 reader. Your gonna' need one anyway. Everybody here has at least one.
If you don't know which one to get, do a search. THEN pay a visit to the tow co. and check the bargain basement Disco for codes, if they'll give you the key that is.
