Disco 1 rear rotor abs ring wont come off...

I've read a few posts where people have this same issue. I suspect I have already ruined my ring becasue I have twisted the studs off of the back of the ring (with relative ease). I was going to order more and thought nothing of it until I saw the price.

Sure I can get some used ones, but I am curious of what will happen if I leave it off. Will I get an ABS fault / red light ?

At your mom's
I've been running without mine for several years.
I removed them when I pounded out the sensors and cut out the sensor leads.

Yea, I's got the amberlamp, but at least it stops when i push the pedal.

Rob if you are going to run without them pull the fuse or the system will miss fire just like when it has a unseated ABS sensor.

Will Tillery should have some I would bet.

Thom

PS...great seeing you last weekend !

I left them off my trail truck last time I did brakes.

Musky I can make my ABS fire on my other trucks if I apply the brakes with the wheel slightly turned at speeds around 30mph. Every day it goes off at 1 stop sign on my commute. Does that sound like unseated sensors? I've been thinking about pulling the fuses on all of them.

that could also be loose bearings as the hubs rock and that changes the tone ring sensor realtion and causes the ABS to engage. But yet might just be a unseated sensor.

Keep at it. You'll probably be able to remove the rest of them and get the ring out, then it's a relatively simple thing to replace the studs and nuts.

I either have the stud come out of the ring, or break the stud on most of them I encounter.

I wasn't sure that we were on the same wave length until I got it out, and now I see what you mean.

I had 4 of the 5 to "strip" out of the ring, or so I thought. Lucky one of nuts did come off and I was able to pry on that screw and force the ring out. Otherwise I think I'd had to gouge up the ring to get it out.

For future reference the studs that hold the ring on are similar to how the exhaust manifold is held together, it's like a piece of all-thread. The abs ring is tapped and the stud screws in, then the nut goes on the end after assembly.

I had assumed it was more like the ring on the front shock tower which was I was bummed at the beginning of the post.

pictures for clarity.

Now I'm off to the parts store to see if they have some new studs that will fit.

I'd love to totally remove the ABS, but that is a long term project and I have bigger fish to fry before I take that on. That's why I'm happy that this turned out to be a non issue.

Don't need it if you don't need ABS. As far as a related question, I pulled the #4 fuse (ABS) under the dash on my 96 Disco. Is this all I need to disable ABS? The reason I ask is that I am getting a constant 1317 code (Rough Road ABS). How can I stop this code from recurring. I plan to permanently remove ABS from my truck eventually, including replacing the swivel balls with non-ABS versions.
