What is the highest mileage D2 ya'll have seen with the original head gaskets? There has to be some that have went over 100k with no problems.

I've had my '04 since 25,000 miles and i'm at 103,900 with no head gasket issues (I did have a valley pan gasket take a crap on me though)

Maybe some do last. I've been looking at replacing my 96 D1 5 speed with a 03 or 04 D2 auto so my kids can drive it. I'm finding some with over 100k miles that haven't been replaced yet and I don't want to buy something that I will need to fix right away. Might be better to get one that has already been replaced.

Just because they have been replaced doesn't mean they were done well and won't need it again.

When I tore into my '04 at 143k to investigate white smoke/no heat/venting expansion tank, the gaskets had already been replaced.

They were completely intact, but installed upside down.

That was NOT the reason for their failure.

Yeah I know. The gaskets didnt fail, as I said there was nothing wrong with them other than being upside down.

Cylinder 5 was the cleaned/bad cylinder, hence the Irontite treatment/experiment...7000+ miles and still going strong.

Anyway, I was backing up your point that just because an assumed professional shop did the job, it doesnt mean it was done competently.

Mine has 137K and has a small bit of oil coming out the rear of the seal. Not too bad. It's an '03. I had it since '07 and it had 64k on it.
I will do the job myself. My friend used to work as parts manager for a rover dealer for years. He's gonna help me do it. Otherwise i would take it in to a shop. Still love my Rover. Ugh!

How can I tell if mine have been done? I had a highly recommended independent Land Rover mechanic check out my truck when I first got it and he said that they had been done, but my brother (who owned it before me and did tons of work on it) said he doesn't think he did them on this truck.

It's a 2003 with just over 100k miles.

Any surefire way to tell?

No way for sure, but you can measure the "wear bar" on the heads and check for stuff most people leave off like exhaust bolt keepers. My 97 showed no evidence of prior hg at 230000

when you pull the valley pan rubber gaskets and find white sealant, then that has never come off. thus the heads have never come off. or if you find paint or a scribe mark on the head bolts, than it has come off.

this is true alot of times, but not all or every time.

seen a few over 165k. I tell people who are in the market for one that those are the best to buy and to avoid any that have just had the HGs done. Not saying they're all bad, but in my experience fresh HGs on a car for sale more often than not means it has a bad block.

I prefer buying a vehicle with good original HGs simply because you never know if they kept driving with the temp on red.

122K minor leak resolved with K-Seal (well I think). This is after the engine has overheated twice. Check your thermostat top hose connection!! Mine slipped off the first time. The second time the plastic connection just fell apart, so the stock thermostat housing has a limited life folks. I was furious as I maintained this car perfectly since new.

85000 on my 04....but I maintain it religiously...just did all the hoses and a new thermostat (180 degree). As long as you keep them cool they usually are fine. A cool thermostat and change out the coolant regularly...and yes...I would never buy one with 'fresh head gaskets'....definitely code for cracked block!!

Your screwed. The heater core and radiator will start to plug up and then the passages in the block will also.
