yes, I am talking about that taping. I have checked and tightened all the exhaust bolts. but it definitely sounds like something in the engine it's self.

I have always taken very good care of maintaining the vehicle, and I don't hot rod it.

Anyway I am just hopping that someone here has a good idea, what would make this sound.

How many miles and does it go away after warm?

Sounds like a sticking lifter, try CD2 and see if it quiets down. Have you checked your oil pressure?

New shells are in my future, top and bottom with only 110k.

106k It seems to start after the engine gets worm. I am thinking about dropping the oil pan and taking a look at the oil pick up.

I just went out and used a medical stethoscope, and I could only here the tapping at the bottom front of the oil pan.

I am wondering if a loose, or blocked oil pickup, could be the cause of this noise? Anybody care to chime in before I drop the pan?? If not, i'll go for it alone, and let everybody know what I find. Sure would be nice to have some more input .

I have spent so much time and money getting rid of this on my 2000 DII. Replacing the cam got rid of it. The cam had excessive end float. I thought it was a liner, rod knock, lifter..........no,no,no. Cam.

Well, I have found out what the issue is, Rod knock.

The tech at Columbia Rovers told me it has just started, which I know to be true, because I just started hearing the noise.

Not sure how much time is left on the old 4.0 but I guess I need to start looking at my options for rebuild or replacement.

Feel free to offer input on my situation.

I know on some cars you can replace the rod bearings with just the oil pan off is that not the case with rovers? In the past I've had other cars that have had the bearings wiped a little and had a little knock but crank looked good...replaced the bearings and all was good again.

You can also try some Marvel Mystery Oil to clean stuff out and see if that helps too.

Don't know about that. That seems to good to be true..

I have run the MM oil and no change.

You can't hear the noise inside the vehicle, even with the windows down, unless you get next to something.

It's times like this, that prove whether one is a true Land Rover enthusiast, are a poser. ;)

I've heard of people doing that,(swapping out just the bearings). But if I'm going that deep into an engine, I'm going to do it right the first time.
Case in point. Several years ago, I bent a valve on the engine on my Harley while it was still under warranty. When the mechanic put it back together, they reused the same rings even though they had removed the cylinders. I challenged them on it to no avail. They said because the rings had less than 8000 miles on them they were still good. I went from having 2% leak down to 30%. The engine was never the same.

Not sure what the noise is now. I spent 9 hours under the rover yesterday, and found no sings of rod bearing wear. At least none that I could tell by pulling and pushing on the rods, and pistons, and manually turning the crankshaft. The rods had no abnormal movement at all. everything was tighter then a nuns ....... Anyway.

I even looked up at the cam shaft, and it was smooth, shinny and no flat spots.

The noise dose not sound like rod knock to me. And it is not consistent.
well that is the update so far. Guess I will keep looking.

Just to clarify, I am by no means saying that it is not rod knock. I am not a mechanic.
I also know that by simply feeling around, I will be able to tell if a bearing is starting to take a crap.. What I am saying is that there was no obvious sings to me, that a rod was failing.
