BMW owned the company for a few years then I believe sold it to Ford. They never built anything other than have a hand at designing the Range Rover Supercharged engine.

If anything they probably pissed the English workers when they added Bosch parts to the DII.

A couple of later Rangies had the BMW V-8s I thought, not just the supercharged ones. I'm kind of looking for an 05 Rangie with one of those engines. Never to wheel at all, just so I can start modifying the disco more.

I know the Series II was. Land Rover was then sold to Ford in 2000. I thought they had some input on updating various parts of the DII.

Yep played a part in the D2, and a BIG part in the P38 and also dropped their 6cyl diesel in the P38 range rover to.

Oh and then stole a few bits out of the P38 and put em in the BMW X5

from what I have read and understand: Not much of the P38 was put in the X5... Wheel pattern is BMW, styling is vaguely BMW and safety is BMW. most of the BMW input was the 03+RR with alot of the 4wd system being similiar and the BMW 4.4l V8. Electronics were very similiar too. Almost all of the D2 was BMW changing it to conform to what they needed to get it certified for 7 seat safetly that is why the back end is soo long...

the freelander had a version of the early "X" drive before it was good (think e46)

Believe it or not, supposedly, BMW wanted ABS technology for the X series.

What they did do however was so horribly overcomplicate and already overcomplicated P38 and transfer that complexity to the DII.

Always keep in mind that the Germans were able to make the trains run on time. Perhaps not much more, but the trains ran on time!

BMW owned Rover since pre 93. All that fancy fandangled d2 and p38 stuff was done while they owned it. Yes rover was sold to ford in 2000 or early 2001 and BMW had already designed the LM rover at that time. Ford released the LM rover(possibly a little early) because BMW pretty much had it "almost" ready.

I understand that it was not a pretty turn over to ford.

I don't think that's exactly correct as BAE owned Rover into the mid-90s. Yup, BMW bought Land Rover from BAE Systems in 1994.

Sounds correct. Point being the D2 was built with BMW as the stakeholder.

In 1988 BAe purchased the Rover Group which was being privatized by the British government. In 1992, BMW acquired a large stake in Californian-based industrial design studio DesignworksUSA, which they fully acquired in 1995. In 1994, BMW bought the British Rover Group (which at the time consisted of the Rover, Land Rover and MG brands as well as the rights to defunct brands including Austin and Morris), and owned it for six years. By 2000, Rover was making huge losses and BMW decided to sell the combine. The MG and Rover brands were sold to the Phoenix Consortium to form MG Rover, while Land Rover was taken over by Ford. BMW, meanwhile, retained the rights to build the new MINI, which was launched in 2001.

There are some parts on a Disco straight out of the BMW parts bin. Some things I noticed so far are seat switches, expansion tank and cap, purge valve, coolant temp sensor. There is probably more, that is what I noticed so far. I wish they would have put a BMW V8 in the Disco.

BMW acquired Land Rover in 1994, the same year the P38 / second-generation Range Rover was being rolled out.

BMW had absolutely zero impact on the early P38 and had little impact on the DII.

Design cycles are on the order of 5 - 7 years. The first BMW impact was quality control and cost reductions through the mid to late 90's. The first 'product' impact was the M62B44 4.4L engine for the 3rd generation Range Rover in 2003 - 2005, 9 years after BMW acquired Land Rover and 2 years after Ford acquired Land Rover (2003 model year introduced in 2002).

It is ironic that BMW had sold to Ford nearly two years prior to the MK III, my 03 HSE has BMW stamped on everything. It wasn't until 06 that Ford really had an impact on what hit the showroom floor.

There are a lot of 'part bins' around the world. There is also a significant amount of 'reverse engineering and manufacture under your own' name going on.

You need to do a little more "googling" the diesel P38 has a BMW 6cyl engine in it, I know you dont get it over there, but the rest of the world does and I would say thats a pretty big impact ;)

LOTS of the electrical systems you will find IDENTICAL between the P38 and X5

You must have missed:

BMW had absolutely zero impact on the early P38
