F'in Maryland DMV is trying to screw me for $4013 on a car I sold back in 2007. I sold it, turned the plates in, cancelled my insurance, and gave all the necessary docs to the new owner. MD mva says I owe them for lack of insurance coverage on the vehicle and penalties since Aug 2007. They don't have record of my plates being turned in or registration cancelled.

I am in the process of getting a copy of my orig bill of sale from the new owner but I am looking for some help. Can anyone run me a carfax on the vin to show when it was registered by the new owner. The more ammo and info I have to take to the DMV the better I can fight these ridiculous charges.

I need to prove my case to the mva that I did in fact sell the car.

I appreciate any help and if anyone could hook me up with a CarFax, please post, pm, or email me at sailfast3r^^@^^yahoo.com (just remove the ^'s).

HUGE Thanks! JH

Trust me, I would love to tell the to stick their $4000 bill so far up their ass they'd have to have a fuckin colonoscopy to find it. But alas, that will only get me so far. So I gotta jump thru hoops.

Wow. Ne'er heard of such.

(Oh, and hey now! I'm one of those fatass state employee slackers! Just over in Virginia instead.... and, not for the DMV.......)

You have to turn in the plates? We just hang 'em in the shed.....

Did the notice come from the state?

My suggestion, FWIW......

Go in person to the office where you turned in your plates. Be cheerful, and asking for help. Explain to them that you sold the car back when, and brought the plates here to them. They will have done something with them, ask how they track such.

If, by chance, you've already tried this in person at that office, and they've been hateful or given you the runaround, instead, go to the next-closest office and get a 'fresh-start' w/ another clerk. (Or, even back to the same office at a different time, see if you can get a different clerk.) That's helped me before, if someone's not particularly helpful at one office, another office might be nicer.

But, the fact of the matter is, they should be able to have the VIN checked to see when/where it's registered w/o you having to get a carfax yourself. The burden of proof shouldn't be on you to prove you got rid of it, but on them that you still have it and haven't been paying.... if you don't have it, of course you're not paying on it still.....

FWIW.....

LOL....you can't just waltz into the DMV and go to the "next-closest office". You have to choose a multiple-digit number preceded by a letter. As you look down at your little slip of paper that says Z-967, all you hear is "Now serving A-016." "Now serving B-132."

I had a frustrating experience with the MVA when I moved to MD. After several multi-hour visit's trying to get a new drivers licence and tags I had reached the end of my rope. I fired off an e-mail to the governers office http://www.governor.maryland.gov/mail/ that was a friday, monday morning on my way to work I got a very helpful and apologetic call from the deputy director of the MVA. It was one of the only times before or since I have been impressed when dealing with a govt. office. Granted, this was under Ehrlich not OWE-malley, but it's worth a try!

Took me a long time to get CA DMV off my tail for the yellow jeep. By the time it was resolved, the jeep was already taken apart by the 3rd owner since I sold it.

LOL! I don't mean, down the hall!

I mean, I usually stop by the Kingsport satellite office, it's 10 minutes from the house but I'm often right by it. But the 'ladies' there can be battle-axes..... so, I usually drive 15 minutes the other direction from the house and go to the Blountville office, since it's the county seat.... ladies there are much nicer and helpful.

Oh, the driver's license uses that 'take a ticket' 'now serving' crap..... the county clerks' offices are good ol', stand in a queue and wait on the next open spot at the counter, just like a bank teller. Then, you're there until you're done. No having to go and sit, then wait again, etc., like the license office does.

I've gotten tags in Erwin and Johnson City, world of difference than Atlanta. Back home I always knew someone there and they weren't asses. Never thought I'd say I'd miss either one of them. Now the drivers licence place in JC thats a different story.

Been there, done that. I've killed multiple 3 hour days at the DMV trying to get stuff done (like a mistyped digit in my Rover's VIN on the title). Only saving grace is the 16yr old girls getting their licenses after school :D

I understand the process of in-office manners and a poor attitude doesn't get far in that sort of situation. After many, many lengthy conversations I know that I do have prove that I sold the car. They do not have records of the plates being turned (even though I did) and I do not have a socalled receipt they gave me when I turned them in.

I feel that I have to build my case with all the documentation that I can get. A CarFax will show the new owner registered the car in his name. I have the # for Tenessee DMV to call them tomorrow in hopes to get more info.

Thanks for the advice.

Leslie, which would be the closest DMV office to Jonesborough, TN? That's where the buyer as from.

I should call them as they might have the best records.

In Tennessee, vehicles are registered at the county clerk's office; I think that's who you *might* get better luck from. Jonesborough's not far from here, in Washington County (good place for antiques). It's the oldest town in TN, FWIW.... It used to be the capital of the state, actually.... but it's the county seat for Washington Co. The county clerk's office in Jonesborough is at 423-753-1631.

Don't forget that Maryland is the place that when my Hewlett-Packard service engineer was kidnapped and murdered, the DMV issued a black man a replacement license for a license held by a Lithuanian white man (the victim of the kidnapping/murder). Worse yet, the Maryland State Ploice had the kidnapper/murderer in custody twice and released him both times.

I am so glad I don't live there any more.

I always got my tags at the court house in Johnson City.
